I used to think this too JMann- but I have since changed my mind. Just the fact that there are computers counting without any way to verify is enough. There is just too much chance for a hack. Surely you have seen 'Hacking Democracy'. I don't know if it happenned in NH or not- but we HAVE got to get this right. It is ridiculous that we don't have better methods of auditing the machines and the votes. I agree there will be some votes that cannot be counted as the voter failed to follow directions. However, that should be a very minor number and we should be able to audit those sorts of discrepancies. I find it completely unacceptable to have ANY machine/recount discrepancies. Several have suggested a receipt or other paper trail. I think this should have happened years ago. We are failing ourselves.
There is one thing to say there is the potential of voter fraud and another to demonstrate there is fraud. No one in 2000 or 2004 has proven fraud. Mistakes, yes but that is different than fraud.
