Literally, it would seem so. But "Federalist" in America today holds as much weight as the word "Liberal".

What I mean is, in politics, a "liberal" is actually conservative. It's right-wing. In contemporary America, a "liberal" is left-wing, however.

That's absolutely right, a federalist is someone who advocates a federalist system of Government, which is where the power of Government is shared between different tiers.

In Australia a federalist is someone who generally opposes the trend towards increasing federal power (known as centralisation).

This exactly like the US's use of liberal. You just take words and you fuck them up, you just take them out back and you make horrifying rough love to them.

I'm a liberal, most of you here are liberals, classical liberals, Ron Paul stands for liberalism, but you can't say that in America because you fucked it up.
