I feel compelled to write this to all those who are confused or angry at how the campaign has chosen to handle this week's attack by New Republic.
Ron Paul and his campaign are handling this beautifully.
This newsletter debacle has long been known by Ron Paul's critics. It has come up multiple times during his political career, and each time it has come up it has died, quickly killed by Ron's own honesty as well as people's knowledge of his character and integrity. Those that have followed the campaign closely know that it also came up months ago and went nowhere. Now, on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, a shill for the neocon/lib establishment brings it up for a quick score against Paul, hoping to take the wind out of his sails. The author knows that in the long run it will go nowhere, as the wishful thinking of race-baiters never materializes enough to cut Paul's legs out from under him.
It was a hitpiece. We all know that. But I think many of you fail to realize what a hitpiece is. It has a special purpose. It is designed to distract and misdirect. It is designed to throw the target off his game, and to get him looking uncomfortable, out of his element. It is designed to break up support and provoke desperation within a campaign. If the candidate goes into damage control mode and calls press conferences to reassure, apologize, explain, or backtrack, then the hitpiece is successful. If it bounces off, then it didn't work.
Paul is letting this bounce off. Why? Because it happened years ago, and he has already answered for it. He apologized and took responsibility. He fired a staff member. He renounced the comments.
How many times must he apologize? In case you didn't notice, repeated apologies are not the sign of a guilty conscience, but of someone trying to sell you something. Ron Paul doesn't do that. He doesn't pander, and he will not be deterred from his message. The hitpiece didn't work.
You want names? You want Ron Paul to finger point? Fine. Then the press will run a piece saying that he's trying to wiggle out of it by blaming someone else, and the story continues. And in the process he may very well ruin someone else's career or name, a person that may now actually regret what they've done.
Or maybe the ghostwriter should "out" himself. Then the press writes up an article how <insert person's name here> concocted the scheme to deflect attention away from Paul, and the story continues.
This piece was a poorly-conceived trap designed to catch Ron off guard and to derail his campaign. It didn't work. The only way it can work is if Ron Paul stops in his tracks to deal with it, at which point the music stops and every available spotlight shines on him. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, he can say to make this go away. All options being demanded here will do nothing but throw more gasoline on the fire.
This is politicking, American style. And there will be more of this if Ron Paul stays in the race. No candidate is immune. And one who threatens the well-entrenched political conglomerate will suffer more slings and arrows than all others combined. Let me tell you, it has been a picnic up until now. Wait until they start to really attack his views on the Civil War, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, his views on decriminalizing drugs (which would include crystal meth!). Wait until they discover that his close friend and mentor was Murray Rothbard, a self-described anarchist. Wait until they see that he writes articles for Lew Rockwell's site, which says "anti-state" at the top. Wait until they rehash his comments concerning Ed Brown, civil disobedience, and not paying taxes. Wait until they link him with the "tax-protester" movement. Wait until the Israeli lobby kicks their game into full gear, or the 9/11 truth movement gets rehased. And on and on...
Ron Paul is a muckraking journalist's wet dream.
This is what you are in store for. If everything goes as we wish, the MSM media will throw all of this at him and more. If the newsletters make you queasy, then you best quit now.
If you think Ron Paul's character and integrity are in question, then note that all of the above issues will be dealt with 100% honesty by Dr. Paul. You may have to hear him answer charges of supporting alleged "criminal" acts concerning the income tax, or hear him defend the right of an individual to discriminate on his or her own property, or maybe even explain why he thinks Abraham Lincoln wasn't a very good president.
His integrity is rock solid. How do we know? Because he takes these views and doesn't shy away from them. You think Ron Paul has the guts to say slavery abolition didn't need the Civil War one week but then is a political coward the next because someone spotted a handful of poorly-worded comments in a 15-yr. old newsletter? You don't know the man, his history, or what he stands for.
And if those comments really bother you, then ask yourself: Do you like the Federal Reserve System? Think it's fair? Like the income tax? Like our government's propensity to use military force to remold the world into something more suitable for its geopolitical strategic interests? Like the Patriot Act? The welfare state? Like the fact that it takes two parents to provide an income for a family nowadays? How's the dollar doing? Are you saving any money? Can you afford healthcare? Keeping up with the standard of living? Feel good about the fact that there is more consumer debt in the United States than ever before? Going to be able to afford a college education for your children? Do other countries in the world love us, or do they fear us? Comfortable with the fact that preemptive nuclear war is being discussed by your potential leaders?
Now weigh these considerations with a few inappropriate remarks from years ago. In light of all the above, I'd vote for Ron Paul even if he did make the disgusting remarks himself. Because let me tell you, people, this may be your last chance to get behind a man who deeply understands the trouble this country faces.
But if the newsletters really bother you that much, then I guess you have no choice but to vote your conscience. Make sure you take the time to reflect, though, when the bombs start falling on Tehran.
