South Carolina Election Returns - 19:00ET (1/21/12) - Official Thread

With so many people focused on electability, I wish the campaign would make ads that publicize the fact the RP has done very well in polls against Obama, much better than Newt!

Exactly!

Start focusing on Obama fails too, just like the other candidates.

So, what's Newt's long term election plan? I really don't see where he goes from here. It looks like he staked everything on SC and maybe Florida, but after that, I just don't see him really taking off once people really get a good look at him and the debates taper off.

Cool -- RevPAC has reporter at Jillian's Billiards, Columbia, SC -- reporting on upcoming party (remote reporter)

Only 5% of voters think Ron Paul is most likely to defeat Obama. Liberal Newt - 48%.

Yuck.

Yep, so far the campaign and Revpac are allowing the media to set this narrative and the older population is buying it hook line and sinker. Gingrich crushing in electability even though he gets destroyed in every head to head poll against Obama.

Yes a winner can be called based on exit polls if the difference is significantly beyond the margin of error. It's called statistics.

Cargo cult statistics, maybe.

Statistical analysis is only as good as its data. If the data's biased, as exit polls have often been, who knows what the margin of error is?

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing Newt beat "inevitable" Romney.

$600,000 on ads is a lot. They spent a lot in the last week on lodging for volunteers, robocalls, etc.

That is a lot, but I don't think anyone could have predicted the events of the past few days. Gingrich gets an unexplicable bump from evanglicals for cheating on his wife and wanting an open marriage and "wins" the debate in the first 3 minutes, gets key endorsements, Huntsmann and Perry drop out, and it is announced that Santorum won Iowa. Who knew?

He took off 4 days after New Hampshire and flew back to DC to vote in Congress. The campaign was more focused on Nevada and Minnesota.

I disagree that Newt has nowhere to go. Like Scott Brown, he may find money pouring into his campaign from around the country if people sense that he's viable. Sounds like he has a big win about to be publicized from this. It's his launching pad to compete in Florida.

Frankly folks I am praying for Gingrich to win big tonight. This may help the Media & average GOP voters cognitively accept the "inevitable" reality that this is just the beginning of bitter drawn-out "precinct-by-precinct" fights for DELEGATES in every state for months to come, which fights will not "come to a head" until the various STATE CONVENTIONS! Maybe this time the Nevada GOP will scrape up enough money to keep the lights on!!!?)

I never remember 'electability' being hyped so much before this election.

terrible

Wow really South Carolina you think Liberal Newt will beat Obama? thats it SC i hope Karma hits the most idiotic state in all of history.

I was hoping I was wrong but considering this is the same state that keeps electing Lindsey Graham as Senator and after watching that national disgrace of a Foxnews debate this week, I am not surprised.

I hope tonight puts a couple things to rest.

First: South Carolina's boast about "picking presidents" is finished.

Secondly: The idea that "morality" or "family values" are really that important to the South Carolina electorate.

on CNN those shitheads saying gingrich isnot establishment, comparing him to GOldwater, are you fucking kidding me!
