The evidence that it's a bad strategy is that it didn't help Rand's numbers, nor hurt Trump's. I'm not saying attacking Trump will always be a bad idea, but when and how Rand did it was a very poor course of action.
Correlation does not indicate causation.
For all we know Rand's numbers would have been even worse if he didn't attack Trump in the first debate.
