A 58-year-old San Jose resident died on Friday after being flung from a golf cart and falling on the shards of two wine glasses she was holding, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Debra Debard was being driven by her partner, 57-year-old Richard Clarke, in an E-Z-GO golf cart on a private olive orchard in Wallace, a small town southeast of Sacramento.

After Clarke made a left turn near the end of the orchard, Debard was unable to "stabilize herself" and was thrown from the cart. The two wine glasses she was holding shattered and Debard fell upon the fragments. She died at the scene, and Clarke was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Bedard and Clarke had been together for 17 years, Bedard's son Steve Bedard told the Mercury News. He told the Mercury News the couple would, "...often ride through the orchard just to check things out and enjoy the serenity of the property." The olive orchard was a vacation residence of the couple, according to CHP.

Steve Bedard told the newspaper that his mother and Clarke "had a glass of wine that night, but Clarke passed a field sobriety test."

He added, "I would never want anyone to think of Richard as an irresponsible man."

Not if officer friendly says you don't. Reminds me of a story a few years ago where a college student blew a .016 and was arrested for being twice over the legal limit of .08. When the kid pointed out that double .08 would be .16 and that the zero in front of .016 is a fifth of the legal limit, the officer said "That zero don't mean shit".

But back to the topic; how inhuman and utterly callous does a person have to be to harass this man during what is perhaps the darkest, lowest day of his life.

Maybe he should have been charged with impeding an investigaton, for not answering the officers question quickly and intelligibly enough through his sobbing.
Maybe get him for loitering if he hangs around the gravesite too long as well.

You can turn off the profanity filters in your settings.
