Actually no. As a little kid growing up I was obsessed with birds, and from that I still know that the bird in the cage is a female redwing blackbird. (the females are actually brown, not black/red)

Ahh yes, thank you for the correction.
I don't think this thing with the birds is a product of human interference.
Interesting. I knew they were brown, but didn't think they'd be barred in that way. Maybe she was younger. *shrugs* I'm no expert, so I yield to your knowledge on such. If so, it lends more credence to thinking this was an event that only damaged this flock. If it were water, or food, you'd think you'd see a broad number of species and more of a geographic spread.
Quite simple ladies and gentlemen.
Contaminated water.
As a former live long Great Lakes resident, we were treated to such displays caused by companies pouring crap into the waterways before EPA laws addressed the problem. It still happens on occasion as well.

You mean they weren't all saved by the EPA.....oh dear![]()
Thanks to the Republican failed idea of what constitutes a Free Market, plus their pandering to Big Corp, EPA laws have been relaxed, or eliminated outright. So we have companies all along the Great Lakes once again pouring crap into the lakes, and other concerns such as the leather industry along the Hudson pouring millions of gallons of mercury laden effluence into that river.
Now just 125 miles from that strange occurrence 100,000 fish have been found dead in the Arkansas River.
The number of birds killed was initially reported at 1,000, but has since been updated to 5,000.

While there isn't really enough info to form a concrete opinion concerning this particular topic, the fact that EPA laws are necessary simply isn't open to debate.
Added in Edit:
And no, I am not speaking of the silly notion of Cap and Trade, nor do I buy into man-made global warming either. Go demonize someone else.
Regardless of whether or not the laws are on the books, it becomes the pandering that is at the heart of the mess.
Chemtrails?
Flouride?
Amalgam fillings?
I can't figure this one out for the life of me folks.....
How do you get all of only one species to die at the same moment?
