Good news for the people of Mississippi—lawmakers have finally removed the state income tax. Mississippi is now joins Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Texas, and Wyoming in eliminating this excessive and predatory taxation practice.

The state has until 2037 to determine how to manage its budget without robbing its citizens and punishing workers. Income tax will fall from 4% to 3% in 2027 and then will see a 0.3% reduction until it is eliminated entirely.

The bill would eliminate the state personal income tax and strip about $2.2 billion from the state budget while raising the tax on gasoline by 9 cents a gallon over three years, with later gas tax increases coming automatically.

Opponents of the changes say the poorest state in the union can’t afford to slash a third of its budget and still provide services to citizens, and that a shift to “regressive” taxation with an increased gasoline tax will hit poor people and those of modest means the hardest.

The income tax is far more intrusive and evil, replacing it with almost anything, especially anything that can be avoided by not buying something, is a major win.
