Why such little support for Whole Foods?

WTF? This thread started as a write up to support Mr. Mackey, of whole foods, health care alternative (which echoes Dr. Pauls) and has devolved into organic vs. who the f*ck cares? Sometimes I wonder.

This is why libertarians will never win elections. They're like the ADD kids of politics.

OMG , I will certainly try .....just for you ....I swear. Be sure to report back and let me know how I'm doing.

I appreciate that.

And a full progress report will be on your desk by Monday morning on the proper letterhead.

That's hilarious. Europeans have very high standards compared to Americans. One of the reasons why GMO's are banned in the EU.

I know for a fact that there are some big farmers markets in NYC. You just gotta find them.

There is several that set up shop in Manhattan at the time square and Brooklyn in prospect park. My family gorges on non organic produce since it's cheaper and close by.

My biggest disappointment is that I have to pay3.75 for honest aid tea. Which basically is bottled tea.

I dunno. I like Whole Foods. Not all of their food is organic. Some is but it's more expensive. I buy meat, cheese, cereal and baking supplies there. The prices aren't that much more than a regular grocery store and the quality is much higher. I also don't end up buying crap like Cheese-its and Doritos when I shop there. Also their wine is super cheap and there's usually something good on sale that won't give you a headache for $6-$8.

I always get the "oh, you're one of those people" when I tell them I shop there. It's not as crazy expensive as some people think.

There is nothing crappy about Cheese-it's and Doritoes....I survived from age 18-21 on a diet of those and Pizza , alone.

Well, they've got my business for as long as the boycott lasts. Maybe longer if I'm feeling particularly healthy by the time it's over. I think this boycott could well turn out to be a boon for them.

Organic ‘has no health benefits’from http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8174482.stm

Organic food is no healthier than ordinary food, a large independent review has concluded.

There is little difference in nutritional value and no evidence of any extra health benefits from eating organic produce, UK researchers found.

The Food Standards Agency who commissioned the report said the findings would help people make an “informed choice”.

But the Soil Association criticised the study and called for better research.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine looked at all the evidence on nutrition and health benefits from the past 50 years.

Among the 55 of 162 studies that were included in the final analysis, there were a small number of differences in nutrition between organic and conventionally produced food but not large enough to be of any public health relevance, said study leader Dr Alan Dangour.

Overall the report, which is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found no differences in most nutrients in organically or conventionally grown crops, including in vitamin C, calcium, and iron.

The same was true for studies looking at meat, dairy and eggs.

Differences that were detected, for example in levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, were most likely to be due to differences in fertilizer use and ripeness at harvest and are unlikely to provide any health benefit, the report concluded.

Gill Fine, FSA director of consumer choice and dietary health, said: “Ensuring people have accurate information is absolutely essential in allowing us all to make informed choices about the food we eat.

“This study does not mean that people should not eat organic food.

“What it shows is that there is little, if any, nutritional difference between organic and conventionally produced food and that there is no evidence of additional health benefits from eating organic food.”

She added that the FSA was neither pro nor anti organic food and recognised there were many reasons why people choose to eat organic, including animal welfare or environmental concerns.

Dr Dangour, said: “Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority.”

He added that better quality studies were needed.

Peter Melchett, policy director at the Soil Association said they were disappointed with the conclusions.

“The review rejected almost all of the existing studies of comparisons between organic and non-organic nutritional differences.

“Although the researchers say that the differences between organic and non-organic food are not ‘important’, due to the relatively few studies, they report in their analysis that there are higher levels of beneficial nutrients in organic compared to non-organic foods.

“Without large-scale, longitudinal research it is difficult to come to far-reaching clear conclusions on this, which was acknowledged by the authors of the FSA review.

“Also, there is not sufficient research on the long-term effects of pesticides on human health,” he added.

So, I guess when AbolishtheGovrnemt said this, "Because the organic food movement is bullshit?" , he was right....

And how long ago was that? Most people "survive" on poptarts and ramen noodles at that age. Count me as one of them. Things may catch up to you later on.

Either that or the United Kingdom's socialized "news service" is shilling for the highest bidder, and that bidder is Monsanto.

Surely everyone around here knows by now that many universities pay the bills and buy out and raze their neighborhoods with the money they get for making corporate commercials that look quite a bit like scientific studies.

...or maybe those evil corporate CEO's are perpetrating a hoax , in order to get us to purchase more expensive food.

Truth is in the eye of the beerholder, my friend :D

If I take an apple, coat it with rat poison and then "study" it, that apple will have the same "nutritional value" as any other apple. Would you eat it?

They all said the study showed no significant difference in health effects. Don't kill the messenger . Ask Dr. Dangour.

Whole Foods about a lot more than just "organic". I've got one a few blocks away from my place in Miami Beach and a larger one right by my gym, and while I don't shop there for the bulk of my food (too overpriced when it comes to basic things) I do go there every week to get certain things. The true advantage of Whole Foods is the selection of stuff they have that the regular Supermarket doesn't. Cheese for example. Their selection is huge compared to Publix, and much better quality. Same thing with their selection of oatmeals, grains of all kinds, and rices. Their produce section is a lot nicer than Publix, and has a few exotic things you won't find at a regular Supermarket.

And while I don't see how life is worth living if you don't eat meat, the place is a gold mine for people who for whatever reason, choose to be vegetarians or even, God forbid, Vegans. They also have a relatively large wine selection for a Supermarket, and this is one area where they are cost competitive with other Supermarkets.

Furthermore, I just made up my mind to wear a Brogdon for Governor tee shirt every time I shop there.

I do think that a lot of the prepackaged organic food isn't really all that much better for you than the regular stuff, but I know just from the flavor and texture of home-grown organic stuff that I produce that it tastes a heck of a lot better than big-ag produce. If you ever taste free-range chicken vs. the mass-produced stuff, the difference is night and day.

Organic stuff may or may not taste better than the big-ag produced vegetables, it depends on the crop, the soil conditions, when it was harvested, how it was transported and for how long. The big-ag stuff is not bred for flavor or nutrition, it's bred for shelf-life and hardiness, organic generally is not.

I grew some lettuce this year that tasted a bit "off." My sister-in-law's father, who is pretty savvy about this stuff, told me that the soil I grew it in was nutrient deficient--and he's probably right. So, at the end of this year, I'll be amending that spot with manure, peat moss and compost. Farming and gardening is still one huge experiment, in my opinion.
