Why do we care about Russia invading Georgia?

It's an interesting topic to talk about, even though I agree that the US as a country shouldn't do anything about it.

Come to think of it, I don't think anyone on this forum has advocated intervention in Georgia. :-/

Nothing wrong with being interested, observing how our politicians blunder about the issue.

I've seen one guy here say we should intervene for Georgia's sake. He didn't defend this view at all and probably has not posted since.

Actually it is our business since our government has been training Georgian troops for deployments in Iraq. So it is our duty to inform our representatives to cease and desist any possible action they may be contemplating!

Slapping a name on an idea and sticking to that idea no matter what is never a good idea. ie: non-interventionism, pro-war, etc.

Elaborate please. Are you saying that it's not a good idea to stay out of the Russia-Georgia conflict?

That's debatable.

Some could argue Georgia was justified since Russia was interfering in their country.

No, it's not debatable. Georgia invaded South Ossetia first. That is not debatable.

South Ossetia is made up mostly of people with Russian passports. 95%+ of the citizens of South Ossetia want nothing to do with Georgia. Georgia is a tyranical Police State with western backing. South Ossetia has it's own government. Georgia bombed South Ossetia and targeted civilians, schools and hospitals.. FIRST. BEFORE RUSSIA DID ANYTHING.

Russia claims they were on a peacekeeping mission. Again, most of the people their have Russian passports. Did they go too far? I don't know. They are backing off now.

Uh, it is debatable. South Ossetia is within the borders of Georgia. It's been a part of Georgia for centuries. Russia giving Ossetians passports isn't a good reason for many can view that as Russian interference.

Russia is full of communists and collectivists. Russia is retarded.

So? That isn't the issue. You are distracting from the real issue by making these statements. The issue is that Georgia invade South Ossetia first and targeted residential areas. Everything that Russia did was in response to said bombing.

Not really. Russia has been interfering in Georgia's affairs for a very long time. It was inevitable that something like this would happen.

No, South Ossetia has had it's own government for a decade now. Georgia claims it only because they are backed and bought off by NATO, who wants the land to control oil pipelines.

It's autonomous just like how Russia has many autonomous republics with the Federation.

Ossetia has been a part of Georgia for centuries. Read about it.

That doesn't mean it is ok to bomb civilians, schools and hospitals and break a cease fire because you are having a hissy fit over the people in a "break-away" region not wanting anything to do with your country.

But that is still Georgia's business. Russia justifying an invasion on those grounds isn't much different from the US's justification for invading Iraq, one of which was that Saddam was guilty of genocide so therefore we must overthrow him.

Plus Russia has no moral high ground on the matter. Chechnya anyone?

I've been wondering why a region which Georgia had originally contained within it's nation, has been outfitted with Russian passports. I haven't read anything about that yet, but it seems to me to be an important factor.

Setting aside the fact that Russia is anti liberty, South Ossetia is part of Georgia. Georgia's actions are similar to a civil war. They are both wrong.
