What is the most embarrassing political belief you used to hold but no longer do?

Mine: I thought the Iraq war was a good, no GREAT idea. I voted for George W. Bush 2x including in 2004 while I was actually IN Sadr City. I used to argue until I was blue in the face that we had to fight them over there or we would have to fight them here and collateral damage (death) was okay because it was a war and Saddam OF COURSE was involved with Al Qaeda and 9/11 and had weapons of mass destruction.

I too was once foolish enough to believe that military adventures on the other side of the planet had something to do with defending the US.
 
I once considered myself a "moderate independent" (how callow and wishy-washy is that)? I suppose the saving grace in this is that I regarded Democrats and Republicans as essentially indistinguishable from one another - and I had no idea what the difference between "liberals" and "conservatives" was supposed to be (I just knew that they hated each other and liked to call each other names). As far as particular policies go, I only had two "pet issues" - I thought that NASA and government financial aid for college students were wonderful things.

Oh, and I ... um ... thought that maybe ... errr ... one-world government was a pretty good idea, too ... :eek::o:o:o
 
I believed the FDA and USDA really worked for the citizens not corporations.
 
I do not think I have any that would be embarrasing , some of them may have suprised my Father and Grandfathers , but if they were still around , I fully believe they would be on board with me now....

They have declared war on us!

Publicly and in person, through the media and in print...

I have been involved in "peaceful" opposition to this burgeoning threat since the '70's, and ya' know what?

They've grown, they've gotten more aggressive and they're more brazen than ever!

I'm old, I'm out of patience and I'm disgusted with myself for thinking for so long that peaceful resistance to tyranny was an appropriate response..

War is waged in my name in this country as well as in others and I for one am sick and tired of it!

To me "they" is just people and their grand ideas. Yeaw Clinton got into the idea of war to end war as well. WWI was the war to end all wars as well.

They is government, government has declared war on the governed, that's me, and you if you don't work for the government...

Courts, the "Just-Us" system, which is part-n-parcel of said government, write the passes for these wars and all associated actions they undertake..

Do you have a better idea than what I've been trying for over 40 years?

Peaceful ain't working that I can tell....
 
A lot of people who post here don't really view me as being much of a libertarian, and I also don't describe myself that way in my username. But, my political views are still a lot more libertarian than they used to be. Even when I voted for Ron Paul in 2008, I still had a lot of views that were very big government and statist. I supported the TARP bailouts for about three days, partly due to fear, because I thought I was going to lose all the money I had in the stock market if the bailout didn't pass. The stock market was just plummeting like crazy at that time. Then a few days later, I finally realized what a bad idea it was after the Bush administration stated that they were going to use the TARP funds for a different purpose than what Congress actually intended it to be used for, and passing TARP didn't do anything to stop the drop in the stock market. The Dow went down another 2,000 points even after it was passed. I realize what a disaster that policy was now and will never support another bailout again. I was also a big supporter of the War in Iraq from about 2003-2006, before I finally realized what a disaster it was. But, it's quite embarassing that I actually used to go to liberal websites and argue with the liberal members and say that they all wanted to "surrender" and "lose" the war. I still don't quite agree with libertarians on 100% of the issues, but it's quite embarassing to think about the things that I used to believe in. I'm a lot more liberty oriented than I used to be.

Most embarrassing? As I look at my list I can't help but think how they all tie together and make each possible for each other -and that FEAR is the common denominator. Fear and it's results is the most embarrassing. I love these threads -a little self examination goes a heck of a long way. NO FEAR!


Low interest rates for FRNs were good -the way their system is setup. (Ron Paul set me straight)

The "alphabet soup" type government agencies were necessary for mine and others protection. (Ron Paul and YOU GUYS set me straight)

Semi-automatic weapons for myself and others wasn't a good idea. (that changed for me seeing the Korean grocery store guys and Rodney King riots)

Retiring and the S.S. system was a good idea. (Ron Paul and others set me straight)

Capital punishment. (Jesus, Ron Paul, and YOU GUYS set me straight)

Belief that the golden rule does not apply on a much larger scale. (encompasses all my ignorance and mistaken beliefs about W Bush & Iraq and all foreign policy of the past -Jesus, Ron Paul, and YOU GUYS set me straight)

Inanimate objects having anything to do with anything people might blame them for. (Ron Paul and YOU GUYS set me straight)

The lesser of two evils b.s. (Jesus, Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and YOU GUYS set me straight -Thank you!)

Thus is the human condition.

Thus it has been, thus it will always be.

I have no grand illusions that any fight now, will prevent it again in the future.

Comes a time though, when tyranny has run full circle, you must decide:

Die on your terms or die on theirs.
