What are you listening to?

"lost out to redundancy."

The better Micks can sure spin a phrase into a facet.

"Like my house that fell to progress, my trades a memory."

"My minds to full with memories, to old to hear new chimes."
Really?!?! I mean, if phrases could flex nuts, these would be big uns.

Basically, this song kicks the shit out of the English language. A notable irony.
Come for it, you dehumanizing scumbags, come get yours. There is no truth, but truth. Those that fall on the wrong side will b e seen before the end. Humans yet unborne will TOAST your deaths. Shit, I spring quarter chub just thinking about meeting your kind in hell.

Putting people in prison, just to make a dime
dropping bombs on arabs, just keeping with the time
where will you hide, and where will you run
when the people you've used find out what you've become.

Hide not in the valleys, hide not in the trees.
We don't come to kill you children, but to make you a memory.

I dedicate this to Obama...

Fifty thousand men were sent to do the will of one
His claim was phrased quite simply
Though He never voiced it loud
I am He, the chosen one

In His name they could slaughter
For His name they could die
Though many there were believed in Him
Still more were sure He lied
But they'll fight the battle on

This one goes out to JFKIII.

Oh, damn! I am a HUGE fan of classic, pre-pop Genesis (especially their Steve-Hackett-era stuff).
I am absolutely kicking myself for not thinking of making this exact post in this exact context ...
(RPFs is broken! I can't rep you for this more than once. :()

Speaking of Genesis ...

The 'tube pic is not accurate - this song is from Genesis' second album Trespass.
Steve Hackett & Phil Collins did not join Genesis until before their third album Nursery Cryme.
However, one cannot bitch too loudly about this, since Hackett & Collins are also "incorrectly" depicted on the jacket of the single for this song.

Peter Gabriel says that this song is about how violent revolutions so often end with putting vicious tryants into power ...

The Knife

Tell me my life is about to begin, Tell me that I am a hero,
Promise me all of your violent dreams, Light up your body with anger.
Now, in this ugly world it is time to destroy all this evil.
Now, when I give the word get ready to fight for your freedom
Now! ...

Stand up and fight, for you know we are right
We must strike at the lies
That have spread like disease through our minds.
Soon we'll have power, every soldier will rest
And we'll spread out our kindness
To all who our love now deserve.
Some of you are going to die
Martyrs of course to the freedom that I shall provide.

I'll give you the names of those you must kill, All must die with their children.
Carry their heads to the palace of old, Hang them high, let the blood flow.
Now, in this ugly world break all the chains around us,
Now, the crusade has begun, give us a land fit for heroes,
Now!

We are only wanting freedom
We are only wanting freedom
We are only wanting freedom
We are only wanting freedom ("Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom...")
We are only wanting freedom ("Things are getting out of control here today")
We are only wanting freedom ("OK men - fire over their heads!")
We are only wanting freedom

WE HAVE WON!!

Some of you are going to die
Martyrs of course to the freedom that I shall provide.

You know, I used to hate Genesis and Phil Collins, because I grew up on MTV and thought their only claim to fame was Invisible Touch and Sussudio, respectively. But man...getting into their progressive era over the last year has been an absolute revelation. So much so that I don't even dislike their poppier stuff as much anymore just because I know what they're really all about. Wind and Wuthering is amazing, as is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway...but I've been known to spin Duke and Abacab every once in a while, when I'm home alone and there's no one to judge me. :D

I don't mind their pop stuff. Some of it is actually pretty good - certainly better than a lot of other pop. In fact, my introduction to Genesis was just as "bass-ackwards" as yours. I grew up in a small town way out in the boonies, and the only non-country-music station I could get was a top-40 channel that also played a mix of classic rock (Skynyrd, Zeppelin, etc.) - they never played anything that wasn't firmly in the middle of the well-beaten 3-to-5 minute path. (Of course, I was not aware of this at the time, because I had no basis for comparison). Genesis came out with their self-titled album Genesis, so I heard "Mama" and "That's All" on the radio a lot. I loved "That's All" - it's still one of my all-time favorite sing-along toe-tapping ditties. To this day, hearing that song rarely fails to perk me up.

So I bought the album/cassette and really liked it. Especially the "Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea" tracks - I had never heard stuff like that before (unusual but interesting lyrical content with long instrumental breaks). So I decided to buy another Genesis album - "sound unheard," as it were. This was no small decision. I had almost zero disposable income and a very limited selection (whatever the Walmart 10 miles away carried). I don't remember exactly what my second Genesis album was (I think it was Selling England by the Pound or A Trick of the Tail or And Then There Were Three). Whatever it was, it blew me away. I was like, "WHOA!! What the hell is this?? ... I ... I kinda like it!" And that, as they say, is "all she wrote" ...
