he knows 2016 is his if his dad doesn't win the nomination.
if daddy don't win the nomination there may not be an America in 2016. =)

Rand did say he'd support the Republican nominee no matter what... he definitely is thinking about his political future.
As you should say if you are a GOP elected official who plans to run in 2016 or 2020.

He can't run in 2016 if someone like Romney becomes President. Unless he wanted to primary the President from his own party.
Romney won't become President. That's the point.
I won't support either Romney or Obama. But the fact is that the polls show a very competitive race between the two of them. Romney could very well beat Obama if he becomes the nominee. I believe that Romney and Ron are the only Republicans who would have much of a chance to beat Obama. The polls show that.
I just don't see it happening. He doesn't challenge Obama on the issues. Obama's numbers will jump once he announces Hilary at the bottom of the ticket. Then you have pro-war vs pro-war, with an incumbent advantage and an untrustworthy moderate Republican. Even Rubio wouldn't carry Florida for Romney when you have the seniors jumping to Obama because they love Hilary.
