In 2020, he realized the more pressing concerns were government psychopaths. So, he pivoted to use his wealth to preserve free speech and rein in government waste, fraud, and control. Again, in his mind, he's leveraging his wealth for the betterment of humanity.

He thought he could use Trump to help achieve those ends. I wouldn't be surprised if Musk heads to Argentina and tries to influence from there.
