"Iran has been making headlines in the news a lot lately, and the president Ahmendinajad has been slandering western nations with violently hateful rhetoric. This immediately gets people up in arms and fearful enough to launch a pre-emptive strike (possibly nuclear) on iran, to stop them from making a nuclear weapons program.

It’s easy to get scared, the president has said some pretty hateful, stupid and ridiculous things including the claim that the holocaust was a conspiracy that never happened. Why do we take a guy like this so seriously? Well the impression the mainstream news gives us is that he is in charge of iran much like George Bush is in charge of America. Unfortunately this is not true, Ahmendinajad is not the ruler of iran, and has no real significant power within the military and iranian forces.

The real ruler of Iran is the “Supreme Leader” by the name of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ayatollah is far more logical than Ahmendinajad and also holds significantly more power in Iran. If there is a nuclear weapons program, it is not up to Ahmendinajad, it is up to the supreme leader of the land. Therefore the news constantly showing images of Ahmendinajad spouting hate and angst towards western nations is nothing more than propaganda to make you fear him and Iran. Many people feel a pre-emptive strike on Iran is justified based on the what fear the News orgranization have put into their mind.

The questions we must ask ourselves now is, “Is Iran pursuing a Nuclear Weapons program?” and “What will be the consequences if Iran does acquire a nuclear weapon?”. To find the answer to these very important questions we must investigate the the issue as a whole."

I say, iran will get nukes sometime, either 10 or 100 years, so might as well get on their good side while we still can.

Iran only pose a threat if we and Israel keep prodding them.

And even if the claims that they intend to "wipe Israel off the map" were true...so what? They'd deserve nothing less.

I would suggest reading State of War. While it is a bit outdated on current events, it does illustrate the case about WMD in Iraq. It is noted that all the scientists questioned in connection to Iraq's old program noted that a combination of sanctions and IAEA inspections had done in the process once suspicion had been aroused.

The one issue not covered here is that there is some evidence of Iran sponsoring terror. However, the US has sponsored terrorist organizations too, by not taking action against them when they have significant opportunity too. One was the MEK, a group that opposed Iran that the US has allowed to survive after it was sponsored by Hussein and still exists. It apparently is on standby for a war with Iran. Another is the PKK, Kurdish Worker's Party, that is ignored by Washington due to the semi-autonomous Kurdish state.

So, I would say that sanctions do have a place, but they should be extremely limited and the high-point of options in the US repertoire. I mean, normally the limit is a nuclear strike, but I would say the worst weapon on the table should be sanctions intimitely focused on certain goods only linked to nuclear arms, and only when their is sufficient need( I would say that now there is no reasonable cause).

I plan on writing a piece for you in the future, and look forward to more.

That's a great attitude. How about if we flipped it around and wiped Iran off the map? After all, they deserve nothing less for being a bunch of hostage taking koran-thumping assholes. Right?

Hell, why stop with Iran or Israel? Let's just nuke everybody. We deserve nothing less.

Did you misread that, or are you just being a jackass? :p

Oh are you another "wipe israel off the map, they deserve it" guy? Well, if objecting to the nuclear destruction of an entire nation makes me a jackass, then jackass I am.

Neither I nor Imperial suggested WE wipe Israel off the map, we advocated non-interventionism.

If Iran wants to waste resources on a genocide... Hope Israel can defend their state.

You can't step on toes and expect impunity. This is the lesson the U.S. should have learned from 9/11.

Ron Paul: 'The fear is, they say, maybe someday [Iran is] going to get a nuclear weapon, even though our own CIA's National Intelligence Estimate has said that the Iranians have not been working on a nuclear weapon since 2003. They say they're enriching uranium, but they have no evidence whatsoever that they're enriching uranium for weapons purposes. They may well be enriching uranium for peaceful purposes, and that is perfectly legal. They have been a member of the non-proliferation treaties, and they are under the investigation of the IAEA, and El Baradei has verified that in the last year there have been nine unannounced investigations and examinations of the Iranian nuclear structure and they have never been found to be in violation. And yet, this country and Israel are talking about a preventive war—starting bombing for this reason, without negotiations, without talks.

there is no threat, if we stop fucking around over there and leave them the hell alone.

MY GOD, this administration is out of control...who are their handlers?

You make a good argument. President Ahmendinajad is nothing more than a blowhard. I do not take his threats seriously because as you pointed out, he does not have the power to carry through with his threats. Israel has enough nuclear power to defend against any threat from its neighbors and everyone knows it.

Unfortunately the neocons in this country will use any and every scare tactic they can to advance their agenda of nation building through continuous war. Our leaders seem to care more about their grandiose scheme of conquering the world than the health and safely of the US citizens. President George W. Bush and his ilk are dangerous. George Bush is a legend in his own mind. He is capable of doing about anything. He equates his position as President of the US to world dictator. Unfortunately John McCain and Obama have the same view -- they have both bragged about being a "world leader" if and when they become President.

An attack on Iran would be economic suicide for the US. With oil approaching 150 dollars a barrel, the mere threat of shutting down the Persian Gulf in retaliation for a military strike against Iran will send the price of oil through the roof, resulting in economic paralysis in the US -- and many other countries as well. Iran has the capability of sinking oil tankers in the Gulf from land, air, and sea.

War with Iran is not an option whether they develop nuclear weapons or not!
