Speculation Mounts That Ron Paul Will Launch Third Party Presidential Bid On Tuesday’s Tonight Show

Speculation is mounting that Texas Rep. Ron Paul will mount a third party bid for the presidency as pressure from his supporters builds ahead of his appearance Tuesday night on NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

According to a report, Paul’s supporters were deeply upset by how the libertarian Texas Representative was treated at the Republican National Convention last week. 300 of them joined in a conference call on Sunday night planning to urge Paul to launch a last-minute independent bid for the White House.

In order for Paul to appear on the ballot in all 50 states, he would have to join the Libertarian party’s ticket — either as former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson’s running mate or as his replacement. The party’s present vice presidential nominee, Jim Gray, would have to drop out of the race.

The conventional wisdom holds that, in a three-way race between President Barack Obama, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul, the two Republican candidates would split the conservative vote and easily deliver the president his second term.

However, Republicans have some reasons not to fear the unlikely event that Paul throws his hat back into the presidential ring.

In April, Public Policy Polling showed Paul would trail Obama with 44 to 47 percent support in a head-to-head matchup. While Paul’s favorability ratings were deeply underwater (32/54 percent), Paul was viewed favorably by nearly as many Democrats (26 percent) as Republicans (37 percent).

A Rasmussen Reports poll from May shows that Paul would steal much of the youth vote away from President Obama. That lost support resulted in a 44 to 39 percent advantage for Mitt Romney among the general electorate.

In 2008, Obama secured two thirds of the votes of those aged 18 to 29. Though enthusiasm for his candidacy is down slightly from four years ago, the president is expected to win the majority of the youth vote in 2012. A Paul candidacy is likely to upend the expectations about which candidate young voters would support.

There is history on the side of Republicans in a three-way presidential race...

This would be really a shocker. Maybe Rand gave them the go ahead after a disaster of a convention?

I hope he runs but only as Presidential candidate, and I'm getting the feeling the idea that the LP was open to that was false. Ron would have to be able to use his polling to get into the presidential debates, and without being on the LP ticket (or CP if we can get them on more ballots still) I don't know if that can happen. I hope to be proven unnecessarily skeptical, but the reason I was getting into this is I had gotten the impression the LP had put the ticket on the table.

Have you seen the opening video to GJ's site?

Did you notice the Gary Johnson - Ron Paul rEVOLution logo in the upper right corner when it just starts and then cuts to him talking about how he'd like Paul to be his running mate?

Also, maybe Ron Paul realized his initial strategy of clinging to the Republicans (despite not agreeing with them on anything) and trying to change it from within was an error too? The Romney threats, GOP cheating, GOP lying, GOP changing the rules, etc. I tried to warn many people what was going to happen. Are your blinders off now?

The video is a pitch for Ron Paul supporters to considering voting for Gary. I honestly don't think there is a hidden message beyond that.

However...

It would be awesome if Ron Paul was to become Gary's running mate. After all, Gary did say during the debate that he would choose Ron Paul as such. :p

Chances are it won't happen but after dealing with some of the CFL/Rand types on these boards recently, I kind secretly want it to happen if only to say SHOVE IT! to those jerks.

How would that work on the LP side procedurally?

His VP steps down
RP steps up to the VP slot.

optional:
GJ steps down
Ron moves to Prez slot
Someone (probably GJ) assumes the VP slot.

If GJ steps down his VP automatically becomes the Prez candidate. It's in their bylaws.

I'm not following how still supporting Rand precludes one from supporting Ron in a third-party run. Most people defending Rand realzie that Ron and Rand are taking different approaches towards fighting for the same things (and I will continue to believe that until Rand's voting record proves otherwise).

Can we please NOT spread rumors?
Have you spoken to Ron yourself to verify that the speculation and rumors have no legs? As far as we know he isn't going on to endorse Johnson or Romney, so what do you think his announcement will be? That's where there's plenty of reason to speculate after recent rumors and the awful way the republican party continued to treat us, even with the national cameras rolling.

Also, why do you care if it turns out to be a false rumor? I think everyone's expectations have already been tempered after the convention for this go round.

I just don't believe it, nor do I support the idea. But if Ron did it you can bet your balls i'd be out in full force to get him that 15% because I just feel like if he can get into the debates he may actually be able to force the house to pick the President.

I still contend the only way this works is if Ron runs under the LP ticket, if he runs as an Indy we'll be doing the 1 thing I think is the most destructive thing possible- splitting ourselves into two minorities with 1 part supporting Johnson and the other part supporting Ron.

We'd end up with a situation where Ron might get 11-12% with Gary getting 3-4%.

If he's going to do this (ill still bet money he doesn't) then he needs to get Johnson off of the LP ticket.
