Russian Navy stops Somalian pirate boat, handcuffs pirates to boat and sinks it

Well , the normal approach is dock into one of the countries that have the death penalty , then they have a trial and hanging , why these pirates would surrender is beyond me . Must be very dumb...

shocking...

should teach pirates not to touch russian vessels in the future though

After watching the video...how do we now there was any one on the blown up ship? Its shot at a distance, in the dark and theres no reports of the Russian navy doing something likes.

does anyone have a link to a news story about this?

Perhapse, but a fair trial is the human rights violation. What if some of them where not involved, or the pirates hijacked the boat and the crew was in need of rescue.

The Russian navy doesn't screw around, that's for sure.

It's kind of hard to hold the Russians to the same standard as our culture here in the U.S. (though, we have abandoned much of our 'rights of the accused' principles).

If it shocks you, then you haven't been paying attention to the Russian naval actions against piracy.

Not making excuses, just saying that's the way it is.

This is an old video as well, OP, as it was posted on youtube May 15, 2010.

The ship was blown up...that's all
They don't kill the people from what I have seen in the past.

They use the ship for target practice

When you loot and pillage people sometimes it comes back at you. I have a hard time feeling bad about this.

At the same time:

ROFLMAO!

thats how u deal with scum!

too bad the pussy brits cant do the same.

This makes me change my mind.

Wow. So many comments in favor of the initiation of force and unreasonable levels of violence. War Mongers for Ron Paul?

Did you see all those guns? These pirates were not on a luxury cruise or out photographing dolphins. I understand they had already pirated a Russia tanker. The Russians performed what in essence was a Marque of Reprisal. This is not a war tactic but meant to stop greater loss of innocent life. It is what RP suggested as the method to go after Bin Laden.

Hmm the injured guy and some others looked like pakistanis... The description doesn't have to be accurate, thats why you have trials.

The somali piracy started when local fisherman were angered by the fact that almost all fish was taken by fishing trawlers from Asia because of the fact that Somalia does't have a coast guard, and because of dumpings of toxic waste from Europe
A United Nations report and several news sources have suggested that piracy off the coast of Somalia is caused in part by illegal fishing.[6][7] According to the DIW and the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, the dumping of toxic waste in Somali waters by foreign vessels has also severely constrained the ability of local fishermen to earn a living and forced many to turn to piracy instead.[

What if the russians are wrong? What if the somali pirates boarded a fishing trawler from Pakistan? What if there were pakistani fishermen on board that didnt have anything to do with piracy? No, I think I prefer the rule of law, and if the laws are not enough - change them!

Somali pirates may have started out that way, but they are no longer angry fishermen. They're mostly controlled and financed by warlords and insurgents who use the money to live lavish lives and fund their insungency and terrorism.

And I highly doubt this was a Pakistani fishing trawler, it's awfully far from Pakistan to make much sense.

I'm pretty sure that the pirates are mostly not fisherman but mostly common thugs...mostly. Mostly doesn't indicate however if there are any significant common fisherman who target fishing trawlers.

Well there are several cases
A Taiwanese fishing trawler

Indian navy sinks Thai fishing trawler boarded by somali pirates, thinking that it was a pirate ship.

And then a similar case to the case I thought was a probable scenario with the Russian navy where Somali pirates hijacked a Pakistani fishing vessel, that was used to hijack other ships, the crew on board it seems. Ironically I just found this case , not hearing about it before.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8441855.stm

There are other cases of fishing trawlers from Asia hijacked by Somali pirates.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy_in_Somalia
Peter Lehr, a Somalia piracy expert at the University of St. Andrews says "It's almost like a resource swap, Somalis collect up to $100 million a year from pirate ransoms off their coasts and the Europeans and Asians poach around $300 million a year in fish from Somali waters."[29][113] The UK's Department for International Development (DFID) issued a report in 2005 stating that, between 2003 and 2004, Somalia lost about $100 million in revenue due to illegal tuna and shrimp fishing in the country's exclusive economic zone by foreign trawlers.[6]
And
Since the problems of overfishing has not ended, and costing hundreds of millions in a country with a a total GDP of 5 BUSD, its reasonable to assume that fishing trawlers are targets by people who do not want to become pirates, but do not want to be robbed by their livelihood.
Through interception with speedboats, Somali fishermen tried to either dissuade the dumpers and trawlers or levy a "tax" on them as compensation, as Segule Ali's previously mentioned quote notes

My argument is not that that criminal thugs that kidnap families and legal companies ships are innocent, just that some of the Somali pirates might be doing the thing that would be done by a government.

I have no problem killing the pirates who are out pirating, as a job.

However, I do think they should be tried appropriately.

Why?

Is it reasonable to kill a guy who lets say, was hired by the real pirates, to help maintain the engine on the pirates ship, or some other such task, and is not really involved at all in the actual pirating? (ie didn't brandish a weapon, etc.).

In other words, I'd hate to learn that people were killed for simply being on the pirate ship if they were not themselves violent or looters, but were just trying to make some money performing a job for some menial income.

I have no idea if any such persons would be on a pirate ship, but this is what I'd worry about.
