In other words, I'd hate to learn that people were killed for simply being on the pirate ship if they were not themselves violent or looters, but were just trying to make some money performing a job for some menial income.

But does not the get-away-driver typically have a reduced sentence, compared to the guy who actually brandishes the gun and murders people? I would think so.

I don't know how the Russian's actions were unfair. They were pirates, and the Russians decided to get rid of them. What else should they do? Pay them to not attack their ships? That didn't work out too well with the Barbary Pirates; the United States had to force them to stop capturing our vessels and enslaving the crews.

They decided that they weren't going to be victims of piracy. Not to mention, as the caption on Live Leaks explained, it was traditionally, the captains decision about what to do with captured pirates.
