Ron Paul Billboards (48 feet by 14 feet) need mockups!

I don't recall seeing any dates for the billboard(s) (OP?), but if this is to coincide with the Veterans Day moneybomb why not keep with the style of supportthemnow.com? Percentages are from Q3. Here's quick and dirty.

In captivity...

I think this one is really good, but needs the website in there...

In the wild...

There's still room for a call to action (for those frequent passerbys) where we could plug the site.

I think this direction could have great results, especially if in a garrison town (anyone know?), but I keep thinking about two things: 1.) "It's the economy, stupid." and 2.) Most people don't know who Ron Paul is.

Yes, where would you put the website? And maybe reverse the colors... red for the writing at top... or black, the turquoise doesnt show up too well, imo.

Billboard Design Considerations - (Yes, more studies) :)

- Encouraging Better BILLBOARD Design -

Advertising via billboards? Avoid and Improve ...

- Not Enough Color Contrast on Your Billboard Ad
- Red text on black or blue backgrounds looks great in print ads, but do not create enough contrast for a billboard ad.
- Yellow text on a white billboard, or vice verse, not enough contrast for a billboard.

! For billboard advertising, go for the highest color contrast. Red, black or other dark colors work great on a WHITE billboard. White, yellow or very light colors work best on a BLACK or DARK colored billboard. !

(At night ? Even with lighting ?)

- Billboard Text Too Small.
- Think big! Use 5-8 words or less per billboard. Never use more than 3 lines of text on your billboard.

- Hard to Read Fonts/Lettering
- Save the fancy script fonts. Ignore the skinny fonts. (use thick, weighty fonts)
- Go for big bold lettering that has impact. It's EASIEST to READ when people see your billboard at a distance or from an odd angle.

(Or when traveling at Highway Speeds)

! Overly Complicated Billboard Messages !

- Keep your billboard message simple and strong.
- Know if you're using it for branding, or to sell. (To reinforce or call to action/changing minds)
- Plan accordingly and keep it simple.

A la the style of Ron Paul's official campaign:

Grabbed the Q3 2011 numbers since they're the most recent.

(I'm still not convinced we shouldn't be doing a "Google Ron Paul" billboard instead. Don't know about Missouri, but around here if you ask the average person who Ron Paul is, they'll have no idea. As was pointed out in FBappDev's, fb album, getting people to research themselves is important. It's how most of us have come to know, and become supporters of, the Good Doctor.)
This is definitely the best one yet. Great work!

And I just don't think we can count on people to do their own research, we have to bring it to them!

There is some anecdote and evidence to suggest that Billboards are READ from Top to Bottom, however they are REMEMBERED from bottom to top.

Just showing how I pictured another layout a minute ago... the pie chart could be a vertical or horizontal bar graph instead. Used pixlr above for a quick mock-up.

The overall design is fairly good, however the pastel colors simply DO NOT work.

Cognitive and Emotional DISSONANCE - Visual dissonance and resolution.

The overall design is fairly good, however the pastel colors simply DO NOT work.

The colors I have used are from the most basic and common color palette. They are simply used at much lighter values.

Much like the "Support The Troops" ribbons, bumper stickers, etc, (that were popularized in the frenetic build-up to patriotic fervor), the colors I use here, their "softness", contrast freakishly with the concept of "TROOP", "MILITARY", "WAR", "DEATH", "INJURY", "BLOOD", "PAIN", "SORROW", "HATE", "LOSS", "SLAUGHTER", "ASSASSINATE", "TERROR", etc ...

The design is to evoke some measure of sympathy with a concept that can only be resolved through Peace, and the need for a Leader, who is peaceful.

The design is to achieve both MAXIMUM visual contrast, (increases visual processing at highway speeds and distances, increases memory retention), and the design is for for MAXIMUM emotional dissonance, your strong reaction a case in point.

You, for the rest of your life, will never forget this Billboard, ever.

- - - The colors used are suggested by Best Practices of professional Billboard design. - - -

And SURE, every design can always lead to the best design, and that's what this thread is about, not stopping ... but moving forward and learning.

The "gentle" look and feel is also designed to contrast sharply with the strong "Military Value" of the word "TROOP", (in standard, military issue, steamer font in plain white color, not pastel). TROOP is the first word the viewer processes.

The steamer font is often emblazoned on MILITARY styled video game DVD boxes that sell millions of copies. The steamer font is the standard, military template for marking.

The "steamer" font is stenciled on Ammo boxes, military supplies, vehicles, etc ... including humanitarian aid supplies. And it is most often painted in WHITE. It is in WHITE here, not pastel.

Nobody is EVER going to forget this billboard, it has powerful and instant recognition, it literally grabs the eyes and commands attention and leaves the viewer in a state of cognitive dissonance, and emotional uncertainty that can only be resolved, through research.

The billboard creates TENSION, with the viewer as they first process the word "TROOP".

The word "Support" is in light green, pure green, green promotes awareness, and it symbolizes specie, currency.

The word "Ron Paul" is in a lighter version of the color used on national level media, blue.

The chart is in yellow, (yellow for cowardice), red, (for spilling blood on the Nobel Peace Prize), and blue, (for peace) ... pure colors, simply lightened.

If the thinking here is that pastels are "light" versions of pure colors, then so be it. For me, this is what works.

Powerful tension, cognitive dissonance ... released through an ever softening flow into the recognition that MILITARISM is resolved by Ron Paul.

NEXT DESIGN PLEASE ! ;-)

TROOPS $upport RON PAUL - MockUp - Daylight

TROOPS-SUPPORT-RON-PAUL-li-.jpg

Fonts used here, including minion, are exercised at the absolute smallest levels. Users with larger, higher resolution screens, (especially IPS screens), might be able to read everything more easily on the MockUp, (but nobody is going to be able to read the disclaimer at bottom right).

When printed as a billboard, the quality of the lettering is of course far in advance of the limitations of our computer monitors and font technology.

In other words, it looks a LOT better in real, physical print, and that is part of the paradigm of print that is vastly different from the computer screen.

And in the world of print, there is the paradigm of Billboard Design.

This MockUp is just to give us an idea of what MIGHT be SOME of the qualities and characteristics the Billboard designs exhibit, specifically, in this environment.

The main goal is to impress the viewer with:

1. "TROOPS"
2. "RON PAUL"
3. Bar Chart
4. "53%".

I'm also hoping the overall look and feel of the Billboard says "infant"

Okay, last one for me...mostly cause I fear this thread is going nowhere.

Someone suggested switching the colors of the headline and bars, which is actually the branding of supportthemnow.com

Haven't heard from JoshLowry in a while. If the goal is to promote this event, time is running short. Just 13 days until the Veterans Day moneybomb and it takes time for billboards to be printed and placed.

JOSH !

Please come and give us an update as to the status of these Billboards.

If we miss this Veterans Day Money Bomb, I think the thread is going to endorse "Google Ron Paul".

Tell us where we are please.

This one looks good. I am checking to see how the billboard owner feels about it. I am not sure that the website address is big enough. Can someone put it up on the billboard and see how it looks up high and from a distance?

Team Spirit - Ego in Check

May I ask why certain people here don't think I can voice my opinion on the billboard designs? I simply did not like the pastel colors used. I am glad that the billboard chosen uses BOLD colors!

By the way, be sure to donate to the chipin! http://www.ronpaulforums.com/conten...o-get-the-Missouri-Ron-Paul-billboard-printed

Are you referring to a post, a public post within the Billboard design thread?

I think you have a beef with somebody in private, coming in here and pissing all over the thread in closing with your belly aching is very inappropriate.

I tried to explain the use of my color selection and you choose to respond by slamming the thread with some sort of open ended *slap* ?

A lot of hard work went into this thread, your comments in closing, after the winning Billboard was selected are very inappropriate.

Would Congressman Dr. Ron Paul approve of your comments?

Okay then.

Anyhow, to get back on track, I think this is a great idea. I'm in for some cash, but it will need to wait until I get an assignment done. I will toss some into the Chippy most likely this weekend.

Kkaykay, I like the look mostly and will throw down once the details are hatched.
