Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) tweets that he won't run for Senate in 2014

I like Rep. Steve King. He's made some bad votes, but he fought hard against Obamacare even when the leadership wouldn't.

I hope we can find a strong liberty candidate to run here now.

King is pretty neocon'ish

He's good on ending foreign aid and opposing humanitarian intervention.

I wouldn't say he's an ideologically pure neoconservative like McCain, Graham or Cotton. He's clearly influenced by some neoconservative ideas on national security, but he's also influenced by paleoconservative ideas on other issues like immigration.

Well, he's out. Good.

Liberty type candidates: Drew Ivers, David Fischer, AJ Spiker, or Mark Chelgren.

I talked to Chelgren at the fair a year or two ago. It was before he was elected. I really liked his views on everything except the war. As he pointed out to me then, that doesn't matter at the state level. I haven't visited with him much since, well, the caucus probably. I'd be interested in his current views. I do like Chelgren.

King is pretty bad on a lot of issues, particularly foreign policy. I think he was the only member of Congress to vote against ruling out sending ground troops into Libya.

War is a pretty enormous issue given the amount of money it costs to maintain all of these perpetual wars. That's kind of like saying that a certain person is a really nice guy, except that he happens to be a serial killer.

Well, at the time I grilled him over the issues, he had never been a politician. He was still running. Now that he's been in office for a bit, I would be interested in hearing if his views have changed.

We know some of these guys but does the state of Iowa? I don't know if they could win a statewide race.

Drew Ivers is the one we need! The reason for this is his strong ties to the religious groups. It is impossible to win an election in IA without being able to get the religious vote. This is why candidates like the huckster, santorum, and bachmann are convinced to run, their purpose is only to split the religious vote off from supporting a good candidiate. The same strategy will be used against Rand in 2016. Drew Ivers in the Senate would be an excellent way to defuse this strategy, since he could not only pull the religious vote for his own election, but his endorsement (as a Senator) of Rand would carry a lot of weight with the religious voters that Rand would need to win. For those of you who do not know who Drew Ivers is, he was one of the higher-ups in Ron's IA campaign organizations, so there is no question that he would be a solid liberty candidate.

It's walking a tightrope though because catering too much to social cons at some point loses you independents in the general election. I'd hate running for office in Iowa.

Yes. There is a perception here that Iowa is run by the socons. That is not at all true. The Republican caucus is not at all representative of statewide elections. As far right as the socons take the republicans, the democrats swing just as far left. And Iowa has a very large independent voting block. Iowa is a swing state.
