Rand Paul Is Hanging Out With Facebook Billionaire Peter Thiel At The GOP Convention

TAMPA, FLA. — Just one day after Ron Paul officially exited the Republican presidential race, PayPal co-founder and libertarian bankroller Peter Thiel made a quiet trip to Tampa to meet with Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and several Paul-friendly delegates, sources close to the Paul camp told Business Insider Wednesday.

According to those sources, Thiel had a private meeting with the younger Paul Wednesday morning, and later met with some of Paul's delegates at a private home in Tampa's Stoney Point neighborhood.

The meetings were not related to fundraising, one source told Business Insider, but rather to discuss "the future of the Liberty Movement," the preferred name of the conservative libertarian movement inspired in part by Ron Paul. Theil, who recently cashed out on his Facebook investment, has donated millions to so-called Liberty candidates this election cycle, including more than $2.5 million to a SuperPAC supporting Congressman Paul's third White House bid.

Theil's appearance at the site of the Republican National Convention comes at a watershed moment for the Liberty Movement. Ron Paul exited the race Tuesday amid a contentious battle between his supporters and the party establishment, leaving his son to mend those bridges and convince supporters — and donors — that he can lead the movement going forward.

This and news of a possible third party run? Would love to see Thiel put up some capital for a run to ensure ballot access and decent exposure for the remainder of the cycle. If not Ron because he's not eligible, but another liberty candidate backed by grassroots.

I attended this. It was amazing. Rand, Jack Hunter, Justin Amash, and even Ann Coulter. We got to talk a good long spell as a NC Delegation 3 on 1 with Rand.

The discussion was free form and open, there was no directed nature. I even got to bring up and talk about my health care reform plan. It was held in Thiel's Tampa beach cottage. One of the (youngest) delegates that came with me said "what kind of place is this?" I said "Shangra La" lol.

We saw the footage of when some of you were interviewed at the RNC. You were great!

Doug Wead has come out and said the Liberty movement needs a "political candidate" to take the torch. He was not implying the candidate had to be a politician per say. But that the candidate needed to be able to play politics. Ron Paul never did. Ron Paul has always been about the message. His style of talking can turn many people off. Listen, WE get Ron Paul. However, the masses need someone like a Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, or Marco Rubio style of politicking when it comes to giving speeches to move those voters our way. I try to tell people what politics is all about - HERDING.

I think Judge NAP could fit that bill.

I keep hoping that Thiel decides to invest in the creation of a cable news program to compete with FOX, CNN, MSNBC, etc.

LNN - Liberty News Network for the win! Do it Peter...do it!

I would invest in that.

They'll simply co-opt it, I personally think the only way to break MSM stranglehold over the TV is internet TV, and we need to move quick before the establishment create the infrastructure.

We bring freedom to the TV in the same way the internet has woken us up. Here is a link to my idea that I had, if anyone has better solution or ideas they can share it to get this going.

How would they co-opt it if someone like Thiel was making the decisions? We need to compete for the generation that still rely on the TV news for their information but it being on cable TV doesn't preclude it from also being shown on the internet.

I have thought about this for a long time and these guys are relentless, power and money eventually win out. The solution is to break the stranglehold of government regulated MSM TV. By opening it up someone could watch some radical stuff if they chose to because we all on the internet have done it, we all have gone to some radical site on our travels to the truth, fortunatley many of us are decent poeple and did not fall for the radicalness, but if we did not goto these sites then we may never have known some of the truth. USS liberty has come to mind, USS liberty is what I came across on my internet travels.

We need to bring this to the TV. So if they co-opt it, we move on. They have run the TVs for over 50years, the internet is powerful, dynamic and fluid.

what I would suggest is parental control built in filters that are solid, not flaky.

We're not 100% sure people like Thiel aren't themselves co-opted or subject to being so. That convention meeting was an uncommon situation, as billionaires do not normally talk among regular folks. Who will have more consistent and heavy contact with him, when push comes to shove? Unless the network's board is set up as a consortium of already recognized independent liberty movement people, who control both its editorial and business decisions, it'll be raided by neo-cons in no time.

The fat cats of the power elite will be all over Thiel to 'balance' any network he runs with 'trusted' mainstream figures and producers (AKA, establishment hacks and flacks, or even some US intelligence assets) to control the content. "Respectability" and ratings will be the pretexts for pressuring the network to cover the same exact stories, the same exact way. Many big corporations will not advertise on the network based on its stands on military spending, drugs and the FDA, banks, etc. You'll notice that RT has been somewhat independent, largely because it doesn't rely on commercial advertisers. It's not just about getting a willing fat cat to start it up, it's about sustaining its viability and liberty content afterwards.

Thiel has invested in a number of things. And with the political discontentment that has become brazenly apparent. Maybe he was trying to convince people to buy into a new country.
