**OFFICIAL** BASEBALL THREAD

I think y'all can too; I sure do hope so anyway...I don't care for the over-hyped Dodgers. Maybe we can see each other in October; we owe ya one!

I don't know what happened to Timmy this season - probably the lack of herb keeping him from his normal self. Someone get that man a pipe! He did pitch a good one last night though, so maybe he's on the way back.

I haven't been paying enough attention this year to know how that match up might play out. I think lack of herb is the problem too, he hasn't been himself since that incident. I hope so, he can make up for all of the first half of the season by getting 4-5 wins down the stretch.

Baltimore won 8 of 10 and they are the top AL wild card now. Can they keep it up, or will they come back down?
A's have cooled off; White Sox still ahead of the Tigers.
Washington = The best record in baseball, what is this The Twilight Zone?

Perfect games have kinda lost their aura. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of the most amazing feats in baseball, but 3 in one season? Looks like we are in another dead ball era. Hamilton's 4 jack game is looking even better.

Only 23 pitchers have tossed perfect games in Major League history.

Only 4 this century, 2 this year not 3.*

*Edit: In the A.L. (Never mind)

That site is bad off. There have been 3 this season; Matt Cain is missing from their list from this season.

Also, Halladay's game from 2010 is missing, and I see Randy Johnson's perfect game at Turner Field isn't there. I bet there are more as well.

ETA: LOL I read it wrong, and it looks like you did too! I count 7 this century and 3 this year now that I scrolled down (I was missing Halladay and Johnson's games because I was only looking at the AL list.)

Having said that, perfect games are popping up all the time these days. The 4 homer game, while always being venerated, has become the more desirable feat in my mind.

No ones running away with this yet. We're past halfway and teams in each division shouldn't be counted out. I'm from the Seattle area, and watched THE KING throw his no-no on TV and i was one happy Mariners fan. Taking 2 of 3 from good teams this week, i think the Mariners should be given some attention. They appear to have turned it up a few notches since trading Ichiro to the Fuckin' Yankees. Stay tuned. I'm hoping beyond hope we get a comeback. Seems the rest of the west is starting to fade a little....my perception anyway...lol..

I don't think it's really a "dead ball era". I think moreso than anything, teams are playing smarter defense than they ever have in the history of baseball. Two of Felix Hernandez' 27 outs yesterday can be directly attributed to the infield shift. Those balls up the middle by left-handers aren't squirting through anymore - they're easy outs.

Teams have such a wealth of defensive data these days on hitters, they can align the infield to pull and the outfield away (this is how defenses play Jim Thome, and rightfully so). They know whether the left fielder or the center fielder should be playing deeper. And so on.

Absolutely. I'm inclined to believe that a reduction in PEDs is at play as well. How many deep fly balls do we see stay in the yard in these no-nos and perfect games? I can think of a few in Humber, Cain, and Santana's right off the top of my head. 10 years ago those balls are souvenirs and we're talking about pitchers tossing 2 hit gems instead of what we have now.

The biggest difference is they made greenies (amphetamines) against the rules. That has had a bigger effect than the banning of any other PED. Apparently the majority of players on every team used to take greenies. It countered the effects of constant travel and playing.

Speaking of the over-hyped Dodgers, I just got in from the Braves - Dodgers game. Pretty good crowd tonight and it was nice to see the Bravos take game 1! Maybe we can sweep 'em for you JFK III.

So much for that! I swear to God, if they melt down again, I'm going to flip out.

I just don't understand what happens to the Pirates after the All-Star break. I wish they would get it together.

I thought that they would have shaken those demons after last season, but it ain't over yet; they could still heat up.
