New spin: He travels first class to Congress (how desperate are they??)

Travel to and from Congress is paid for by the government.

No, this is definitely something that should be clarified. Given his other actions, there's a significant likelihood that Ron turns down the government's offer to pay for the flights. We need to find out if he does or not.

From Culturemap, citing the AP:
Paul's congressional staff claims that he "chose not to buy the cheaper economy tickets at a fraction of the price because they aren't refundable or as flexible for scheduling."

But an Associated Press review found that "most of the flights for Paul were purchased well in advance and few schedule changes were necessary. Nearly two-thirds of the 49 tickets were purchased at least two weeks in advance, and 42 percent were bought at least three weeks in advance."

This just in: Hard-hitting journalist Dana Bash asks Ron Paul about the rumor that he uses two squares of TP more than his Congressional counterparts when he wipes.

If RP doesnt fly in the cargo hold then he is wasting tax payer money.

Stupid, why is this even posted here?

I posted it here because I know that this topic will be brought in conversations that I have with others about Ron Paul.
I don't usually think about things like this, and I'm not well versed in politics....I absorb, and think about the comments that others make, which, in turn, makes me sound more credible when I try to explain things like this to others.

Thats the beauty of a forum....it's a discussion and a place to learn.

This is just one (of many) comments that will help me in a conversation:
Ron Paul votes against Congress pay raises, does not participate in the taxpayer funded Congressional pension program and would take only $39,000/year for salary as President instead of $400,000/year. Associated Press: Paul flies first class sometimes.

Just out of curiosity- does he accept a reduced Congresional salary? If he took a lower pay than other Congressmen, that would set a good example. How does he do on that?

This reminds me of an article I read (I believe in the WSJ) about North Korea "splurging on luxury" because there were three, decades-old, Lincoln limousines in a parade ushering in their new dictator, as though it was unusual that Kim Jong Eun wasn't being escorted to his palace in a hay-lined wheelbarrow. I lost a bit of respect for the WSJ after running this piece, as it was an insult to my intelligence for them to assume I would believe that a few Lincoln limousines from the 1990s is a sign of outlandish spending for the supreme ruler of any nation.

The example here with Dr. Paul is especially ridiculous, and in my view only discredits the imbeciles who wrote the piece (and I am amazed that it took two of them). It discredits them because they had an opportunity to challenge the ideas of Dr. Paul, and they chose to merely attack his character with a low brow hit-piece. Of course, to challenge his ideas would be to first understand his ideas and then have better ideas, but that is clearly beyond the scope of Mr. Blackridge's and Mr. Braun's journalistic talents.

And how disappointing it is for me, to be a supporter of Ron Paul who thirsts for actual criticisms and debates of his ideas, if only for the sake of education and open-mindedness. That is all I ask for, yet I am served these absurd allegations of hypocrisy simply because Ron Paul is not the caricature that the media and the uninformed expect him to be.

You know, putting him in first class is good, as well as private bathrooms. In Jesse Ventura's own words: "We just have to worry about keeping him alive!"

Paul must be protected at all costs!

And if Paul flew coach, the headlines would be: "Paul fights Washington spending, but uses airplanes instead of taking much cheaper train"

So, do any other congressmen (or congresswomen) fly anything less than first class?
I still haven't found an answer to that. Somehow I doubt that they do.

I saw this an hour ago, and had the same exact thoughts as you. Let's fail to mention he isn't taking the retirement and he returns money every year. They seriously repeated two entire paragraphs, trying to make the same point. Basically, over a period of 2 years RP's congressional campaign spent $25,000 more on first class tickets, with a very (apparent) legitimate reason given by his office...but they kept on bringing up the $50K.

LOL, love how it mentions they looked at it when Bachmann was in also, but surprisingly this is only just now coming out...when her campaign wouldn't even release the records as requested.

I hope my VOLUNTARY contribution paid for RP to fly first class... He deserves it for being the champion of liberty. It is a small consultation prize for all his hours studying economics and politics unpaid.

Pleasssssssssssssssssssssse.... lmao... I may hate the size of government, but if I have some money in my bank account; and want to have a romantic night with the spouse... Fly to Vegas, first class.... champaign... kissies.... on my own bank account... what the hell wrong with you in the media... who earn your money when an 18 year old dies in Iraq... Afghan....

This so called news media worse than WWII Tokio Rose... They are disgusting to the very core... I would take 1000 homesless peeps and feed, rather than these maggots.

So worst case if you believe the story is RP spends an extra $13,000/year for the first class travel.

I say lets do a money bomb to show RP supporters are willing to pay for it. Good god, he is probably much more productive in first class than sitting in the cramped economy class. I'm sure the taxpayers are getting their money's worth.

Think of all the money lobbyists spend on other politicians (that RP refuses to take) that is passed on to the taxpayers in their projects. $13,000 is chump change.

This attack is a total sham though. He's NOT buying first class tickets on the taxpayer dime, which is what they're trying to insinuate. He's buying full-price fully-refundable coach fares, at the government rate, in case his plans change. Then he's getting FREE upgrades to first class because he's an elite-level customer for Continental. This is very standard practice in business.

He theoretically COULD save more money by buying non-refundable coach fares, but then he'd be out of luck if his plans changed.
