(Reuters) -At least 22 people were killed and 50 to 60 wounded on Wednesday in mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine, NBC News reported, citing a Lewiston police source.

Maine State Police and a county sheriff previously reported there had been an active shooter on Wednesday night but did not provide details.

"There is an active shooter in Lewiston," Maine state police said on the social media platform X. "We ask people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked. Law enforcement is currently investigating at multiple locations."

The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office posted two photographs of a suspect on Facebook, saying he was at large.

The county sheriff asked for the public's help in identifying the pictured suspect, a bearded man in a long-sleeved shirt and jeans holding a rifle in the firing position.

The Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston issued a statement saying it was "reacting to a mass casualty, mass shooter event" and coordinating with area hospitals to take patients.

Lewiston is part of Androscoggin County and about 35 miles (56 km) north of Maine's largest city, Portland.

The Sun Journal, citing a Lewiston police spokesperson, reported shootings at three separate businesses: Sparetime Recreation, Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, and a Walmart distribution center.

President Joe Biden has been briefed and will continue to receive updates, a U.S. official said in Washington.

Maine Governor Janet Mills said in a statement she had been briefed on the situation.

At least 22 people are dead following a gunman opening fire at three separate locations across Lewiston, Maine.
The suspect also injured another 50 or more people.
Police identified the possible suspect as Robert Card, 40, and believe he may be driving a white Subaru Outback, according to CentralMaine.com.
Emergency personnel were called to separate shootings at Sparetime Recreation bowling alley, Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant and a Walmart distribution center, according to the Sun Journal.
The believed death toll nearly matches the annual number of homicides in the state of Maine -- with 29 homicides being reported in 2022.
Lewiston is a city of about 38,000 almost 30 miles near Portland.
President Biden was notified about the mass shooting.

Police in Lewiston, Maine, have identified Robert Card, a 41-year-old retired military officer, as the main suspect in the shootings at at least two businesses in the city.

Card, who is twice divorced and a father of three children, has a history of arrests for domestic violence and other crimes. One of his ex-wives obtained a restraining order against him.

While Card identifies as an independent politically, reports suggest he may have voted for Barack Obama in the past.

There have been no signs of suspicious activity in recent weeks, either in person or on his social media, and there is no record of mental illnesses.

50 homicides is a busy four day holiday weekend in Chicago or New Orleans.

That's what I expect when I see "mass shooting" headlines. One car parked far from the venue (employee) and two police cars. Sounds legit.

We've all been missing the mass shootings for a while. I didn't have that back on my bingo card yet. Kinda played out and boring.
