What could some reasons for personal use be to own a gun silencer. Logistical arguement im engaged in with someone saying there is no non threatening reasons to have it. The only thing I could come up with is maybe a benefit to hunters?

Supressors are used mostly for safety purposes!

They reduce (note, not silence) the sound of each shot, greatly reducing the possible damage to the operator's hearing. In close quarter scenarios, this also benefits those around the operator. Have you ever fired an Ar-15 with no ear protection? A couple rounds and you're ears are ringing good. Imagine if you were defending your home from an intruder and did not have a supressor or ear protection; you and your family could be temperoarily deaf.

Supressors also reduce the amount of felt recoil, eliminating dangerous muzzle hop/climb, ensuring more control over the weapon and greater accuracy.

Supressors make shooting more enjoyable and less offensive to others at the range.

Supressors will ensure that no noise ordinances are violated if you're shooting on private property.

Supressors don't alert one to your location as easily as an unsupressed firearm.

Supressors are wonderful items.

Owning something does not mean you will use it, owning something is not a crime. In case this guy is for banning silencers.

A silencer is meant for a stealthy kill, and if you only wanted to kill someone in justified self defense there would be no need to be stealthy.

Edit: Never mind the guy above me makes pretty good points.

The best argument for owning a silencer is: None of your fucking business.

There are thousands of people who enjoy them without committing crimes with them, in fact I would bet that there is not one legally owned and possessed (form 4) silencer that has ever been used to murder someone ever.

Next time he asks why anyone should be able to own anything then ask him why he should be able to have a dick since he could rape someone with it, then kick him in the vagina for good measure so he'll remember it.

This was the answer that I agreed with at the "gut level".

OP has good points as well. Home defense reason - want to be able to defend against intruders without waking wife....:)

From a practical standpoint, gunshots are deafening. Rifle fire indoors like in a self defense scenario would be permanently deafening in short order. Depending on where you shoot outdoors it can be obnoxious to others.

From a self-serving standpoint, as cool and fun as shooting guns are, it is 10x cooler and more fun shooting suppressed guns.

But that is all irrelevant, the bottom line is, he's not paying for them so therefore it is none of his business what anyone else decides to spend their money on.

FYI, although 'because i want to' and 'none of your fucking business' are my first and best answers, chances are you'll turn a sheep off with those, which is unfortunate. I try to engage them as I shear them with facts and common sense. Then before they know it, they're bald as babies and come to the "its none of the government's fucking business' on their own. carrot and stick; praise and punishment; honey and vinegar: use these tools and you're much more likely to wake a person up. using the stick right away is usually too much for these types of mindless fools. it shouldn't be that way, but remember, we're up against decades/lifetimes of propoganda, brainwashing and a general dumbing down of the American population.

Children do not always pay attention when you tell them they need to protect their hearing.

Its for the children.:D

3 reasons for a sound suppressor: Health, tactical, and good manners.

Health: Sharp loud noises are not good for your ears.

Tactical: If you have to defend yourself in an enclosed space (like your house), it would be nice to keep your hearing unimpaired so as to detect other threats and to communicate with your family or the cops on the phone.

Good Manners: If you are lucky enough be able to shoot on your property, your neighbors will appreciate not being disturbed by gunfire. The local sheriff will also appreciate not getting false reports of shots fired.

I've got a practical reason!

If you're repelling a home invasion at 2:00 in the morning and your next door neighbor has to be up at 5:00 for an early meeting, he'll thank you for the courtesy! :D

I'd like to see some kind of 'noisemaker' on arrows. They're waaay to quiet.

Perhaps your friend can tell you why people shouldn't have a silencer for their pistol or rifle.

Let's see what kind of an answer he gives you.

It's like asking for a legitimate reason to own a sharp stick. People shouldn't support preventive legislation. All of the what ifs in the world would be banned.
