[Kickoff 2012] NFL Football is Back: Discuss your games here.

Pittsburgh is not a very big market. Nor is Green Bay Wisconsin. Or New Orleans- all Super Bowl winners in the last five years. I consider New York, Chicago, LA to be big markets.

Also note how rarely teams win back to back bowls- not like the Yankees in baseball (Los Angeles is in the process of becoming the New Yankees). (fewer repeat winners in baseball now too).

Green Bay is definitely not, which is why I listed it as an outlier. Can't believe I forgot the Saints. Pittsburgh I would consider a big market, although it can be argued otherwise. According to Nielsen, it ranks 23rd in the U.S.: http://www.nielsen.com/content/dam/corporate/us/en/public%20factsheets/tv/nielsen-2012-local-DMA-TV-penetration.pdf

The parody in the playoffs in the NFL is better, but in terms of teams re-appearing in the Super Bowl, parody fades somewhat. The line ESPN is throwing around is that this is the first Super Bowl without a Manning, Roethlisberger, or Brady in quite a while. There are many reasons the NFL has more competitive balance, generally speaking, than the MLB or the NBA. The game itself is one reason. How the schedule is structured, which allows for much more random variance, is another. The big change-over in rosters from year-to-year is another. The draft process and how many positions are on one team is another.

Pittsburgh has always had poor baseball teams (in recent years certainly)- they also not surprisingly have one of the lower payrolls in the game (but are still a profitable team for their owners). Their population is only about 300,000. Last season they finished above .500 was 1991 http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PIT/. while their football team has won six titles. Without revenue sharing, they would not be able to afford a quarterback like Ben Rothlesburger.

My brother is an obsessive Pirates fan (with the clothes and baseball caps, to boot). Their plight is not lost on me. The way it's looking, they'll have a while to go before reaching the playoffs again. You can't be arguing that revenue sharing is the reason the Steelers have won their titles while the Pirates have been terrible...right? There is revenue sharing in baseball as well. Sure, it's not to the same degree, but the Miami Marlins and their owner Jeffrey Loria are enjoying the fruits of it. I'm not saying I would get rid of revenue sharing in football, but it is fun to sit back and theorize how the NFL would look without it.

I'm in San Diego and we have not had great baseball teams in recent years either. The last time we were any good was when they wanted to get a new staduim built so they hired some pricey talent for a couple of years and won the National League title in 1998. Once the stadium was aproved, the pricey talent was let go. Made the playoffs twice since then (lost in first round- not much over .500 both times) because rest of division also sucked. Now that LA is "Mr Big" or "Yankees West Coast" probably won't go back for a while (new management though so who knows?).

Basketball plays rediculously long seasons and they have limited numbers of "highly talented" players like Kobe and Lebron so the same guys tend to win the most there.

My Pacers look good, well, to me :)

RG III gets the rookie of the year award?.....hahaha....typical east coast bias. Wilson was the clear winner.

Thanks Russell for a record setting year.

I shoveled my driveway, but didn't leave yet.

Was there a line waiting to get in?
(This is insanity at an Apple store in NYC)

Wow, the NFL sued churches trying to cover expenses and make a few bucks.

You have to be an absolute idiot to go to the Apple store in Grand Central Station.

A neighbor is moving and gave us a converter box with a digital antenna.

SO WE DO IN FACT GET TO WATCH THE SUPER BOWL! GO 49ERS!

Zippyjuan sure knows how to stir the pot. One could argue that the system could work much better. Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, and Alfred Morris might argue that the system is unfair since they can't get their big payday for a bit longer because of the rules. Some of the big name teams who make the big bucks also might complain. Would the league be better with fewer teams? The NBA is a better example of a Socialist system gone awry.

The NBA should be cut to 16 teams. MLB could be cut to 24. You can argue the NFL needs to cut teams. All 3 leagues suffer from most of the owners not being willing to spend what it takes to win. They're more worried about their wallet.
