Well, here's some things to think about.
Ladies and gentlemen meet Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy. Like most congresscritters, she's an idiot. However, this one is a special kind of idiot. Why is she a special kind of idiot? Because on 2/13/2007 this particular idiot decided to stand in front of congress and introduce
H.R. 1022: Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007 which already has 67 cosponsors.
This is a vile piece of legislation designed with one purpose and one purpose only. To disarm the populace. To make any weapon with any significant power unlawful for any law abiding citizen to own. Basically, once this bill passes, the only legal weapon will be a .22 caliber handgun so long as the magazine contains less than 11 rounds. This is the bill that will disarm the populace, an act which will solidify this nation's path to tyranny. Bigger and bolder than Clinton's Assault Weapons Ban, this ban makes nearly all hunting rifles and shotguns illegal, with the only 'grandfathered' weapons being those that were also grandfathered under the original Clinton ban. That means you'll be forced to destroy or turn in any weapon that falls under this ban and was manufactured before the original ban's enactment.
That's right, this piece of legislation will ask Americans to 'hand them in' or face prosecution. This bill was introduced in February 2007, and sent to committee in March of '07. Why is it still in committee? Because even if it passes the house and senate, Bush will veto it. The gun grabbers know they only need to wait until after the election to send this clearly unconstitutional ban on it's way.
Some might say that
District of Columbia V. Heller made this type of draconian ban unconstitutional. I will remind those people that the Supreme Court determines the constitutionality of legislation.
D.C. V. Heller was decided on a 5 to 4 margin. That means 4 justices were towing their party line, or serving an interest other than the constitution, rather than voting on the constitutionality of the ban. If the justices were being impartial, and interpreting the constitution, then the vote would have been 9-0 with no questions asked and no eyebrows raised.
So, I have to look at two facts: This gun ban will be forced out of committee under the next administration. Many more gun bans like this one will be authored under the next administration. The next administration will likely appoint 2 to 4 justices to the bench. Who can I trust
more to appoint constitutional justices while vetoing this type of legislation? I don't trust either of them completely, but I trust McCain more than Obama, that's for sure. McCain, with a democratic congress and ailing economy, could be a 4 year stopgap. While those of us outside politics in usual continue to build momentum.
