I don't know if you will need a car when you are there, but you might want to consider flying. I just did a quick round trip Buffalo -> Des Moines on Orbitz, and it came up around $450 round trip inclusive of fees. When you figure in the massive amount of time driving takes, the danger of driving alone, plus the expense of hotels, flying might actually be a better option. But you've probably already thought of this, still, thought I'd post it up

I thought about flying, but they want people to bring cars if they can for driving people to different places while in Iowa.
