Earth is 9,000 years old, says Rep. Paul Broun, who sits on House Science Committee (start

9,000? Outrageous! It can't be more than 400 years old!

This guy is as crazy as Bachmann.

Im telling you people, the christian right will be more destructive then all the communists and socialists and neocons and corporatist combined.

If the Christian Right takes power get ready for a new dark age.

Right in time for the Vice Presidential debate!

Yep. It's the establishment red herring. It's working great in this case. No need to discuss real issues.

It's been far too long since we had a good old fashioned evolution vs. creation debate. Maybe they'll save that for a Vice-Presidential debate...

I remember in my high school religion class being taught that the Earth is around 6,000 years old. Our pastor had us work it out through the genealogy listed in the OT(I think) where it listed all the ages as well as the family line, and at the end you end up with Adam being created around 2,000 BC.

It's a more common belief than people probably realize. I was WELS Lutheran.

We should be so lucky.

The "dark" ages brought about the rise of capitalism on monastic estates, the establishment of the western legal tradition, and the rediscovery of Greek philosophy.

Things were going awesome until the enlightenment came and screwed everything up.

I was Lutheran as well, but we were never taught anything in regards to timelines, and genuine science was encouraged. I guess the bible was considered more like Aesop's Fables in that it was about morality rather than reality.

Just spitballing here: Let's create an institution in society with the ability to make absolutist declarations on things like science, philosophy, and morality. That way, people who hold subjectively bizarre views can potentially impose those views through various machinations on society as a whole.

I mean, I just think it's a great idea to create an institution in society with that power! Now, don't get me wrong - I think we should write down on a piece of paper that this institution can't make use of these powers; and while I acknowledge that writing something down on a piece of paper has no more weight of force than what can be summoned by that very piece of paper... well, I still think it's a good idea, because I have a few ideas about how "society" should be organized.

The earth could have very well been created in six days. People fail to understand how time is not a constant. It varies with the concentration of gravity at the point and time it is being measured. As the universe expanded, the concentration of gravity was much higher than it is now. This would make the passage of time as measured now, seem much slower. Sure if we use our current clocks, it would be many millions of years. By the clock being used during those six days, a lot more happened in each twenty four hour day than happens in our current twenty four hour day.

WIKI
The Committee on Science, Space and Technology is a committee of the United States House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction over non-defense federal scientific research and development. Specifically, the committee has partial or complete jurisdiction over the following federal agencies: NASA, the Department of Energy, EPA, ATSDR, NSF, FAA, NOAA, National Institute of Standards and Technology, FEMA, the U.S. Fire Administration, and United States Geological Survey.

Finally! It has taken too long to play the evolution card.

Another red herring.

I'll take a Paul Broun who believes that stuff and votes against the renewal of the Patriot Act over some latte-sipping big government activist every single time.

Why aren't they teaching this stuff in schools? ALL kids should know that the earth is 9,000 years old! (Man- that is even older than I am!)

I certainly understand your point, but that seems like quite a stretch. Then again, I think the OT is a whole lot of re-hashed bullshit, so take that for what it's worth to you.

Anyone who votes against the Patriot Act is fine by me anyday, even if I could never agree on other things. Thanks for bringing that up--he has my support on that alone.

Wow, a 9 thousand year old dude. That guy has the secret to immortal life.

For those who are interested, start with this video at 34:46 and go from there. It's pretty interesting.
The entire video is excellent but you can get a good idea of what this physicist is talking about by starting at 34:46.
