Earth is 9,000 years old, says Rep. Paul Broun, who sits on House Science Committee (start

I have to look at a couple factors. One is Newton's Law of thermodynamics. Until this is ever proven wrong I have to believe it (the universe) always was and always will be. Second C = 299,792,458 m/s. If we know stars/light we are seeing from the hubble telescope (as an example) is billions of years old we know it took billions of years to get here. We can easily view an age to the universe far greater then 9,000 year. Now that does not mean much in considering the age of the earth, but because we can see these things. See them in action it gives us clues. We can search for clues here on Earth. Nothing demonstrates an age of 9,000 years except one stopping to do anymore research past 9,000 years.

Never saw this coming... ;)

Might as well hope this is a question at the Vice-Presidential debate. Could be fun. Bottoms of the ticket may be opposite of the tops of the ticket.

We should be so lucky.

The "dark" ages brought about the rise of capitalism on monastic estates, the establishment of the western legal tradition, and the rediscovery of Greek philosophy.

Things were going awesome until the enlightenment came and screwed everything up.

The enlightenment screwed things up....really? I don't disagree that post-Enlightenment mass State-centralization occurred, however, during the Enlightenment de-centralization was the status-quo, as well as the expanse of liberty, free-thought, and respect and recognition of property rights. The first 'modern' expose of markets and property rights didn't occur until really the 16th Century with the Spanish Scholastics (Salamanca) - granted, they were religious, however, who wasn't at that time. What is important is that they used REASON not Faith and Religion, to arrive at their conclusions, thesis', and methodology.

Physics/Chemistry (e.g. math) has pretty much shown creationists (not intelligent design folks) to be as smart as a rock. They don't use reason and logic at all. Their whole modus operandi is appeal to authority.

Please don't tell me you believe in the 6,000 year old Earth non-sense. We do not even have to show any math - just take a stroll through Siberia to see the massive destruction of an ancient volcanic field the size of the United States. Yeah, the effects of that wouldn't last 6,000 years. /shrug

That is honestly the only argument I've gotten from the other side as well. I don't have a PhD, how dare I questions the great experts in the field. Though, I realize I'm not as educated and am undecided, realizing it is impossible to truly know the past.

Well, you've only ever met idiots then. I point to evidence, logic, and reason, not to Ph.D's. Also, it is not impossible to know the past. All you need is some basic chemistry understanding along with geology. Easy stuff to comprehend. We're talking just basics.

If the Bible says one thing, it definitely denies that the universe was "created for the benefit of humanity". Quite the opposite actually.

Anyway, I'm not dogmatic on young-earth vs old-earth because I believe some things are open to interpretation and the passage of time is relative.
So you disagree with the entire history of Humanism? Of course the Bible says the Universe was created for mankind, it says the animals were created for mankind.

I can understand this point. In this case it would be like, who do I believe, a Ph.D telling me evolution happened, or a religious leader telling me creationism happened according the the bible? We are not experts in all fields, if a mechanical engineer came to me with a detailed theory of machines, I probably wouldn't be able to really know if he was telling the truth or not, so I would fall back on whether this person is trustworthy or credible. If an expert cook came to me explaining how to make the best recipies, I probably wouldn't be able to offer much input either.

People need to make their own decisions based on what is right to them. I guess that is a goal to aim for.

Then there is also the case of willful ignorance or arrogance to not listen to evidence or facts around you, which is not as admirable of a position.

One of my college roommates had a set of DVDs by this guy named Kent Hovind. Those videos covered a range of topics from the Federal Reserve to trying to scientifically prove that the Earth was 6000 years old. They were actually quite interesting. Hovind ended up in prison for tax evasion. I digress.

Anyway, I went over to on the issues and looked this guy up; he's actually pretty damn good. I really don't care what he thinks about the evidence of string theory, so I'm not all that concerned about his opinion on the age of planet Earth. He voted against the bailouts and the unpatriot act, so he's fine by me.

I can agree with you on this voting which was good!

although, digressing a bit, it seems that Todd Akin, who is also on the House Science committee, recently claimed that

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin once equated abortion providers to terrorists and suggested that it was "common practice" for them to be "giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant."

This guy on the science committee and thinks that women who are raped don't get pregnant :o

What type of science did these guys study?

The phony christian right politicians were starting to look really corny even before the end of the first Bush administration. He's lying when he said the founding fathers believed the same things. They were enlightened people.

Especially Paine and Jefferson.

Any philosophy that is based on faith on not reason will end badly. The main religions of the world are, have been, and could be again the most destructive thing you and I will ever know. The christian right in this country is a bigger threat to my liberty than any other idea. If you think what we have now is bad just hold of a bit. See what happens when the people choose that door to go down. We will not come back out of it in are life time. No other tyrannical idea has been able to keep people down for hundreds of years on end like religion. Left wing tyranny is bad but it never lasts long. religious tyranny is worse and it lasts centuries.

It will not be the left that puts the last bullet into the renascence. It will be the Christians that finally end this wonderful country. I don't suppose i will make many friends saying this.... But just sit back and see for yourself.

Has anyone considered,,?

The possibility that we are not the first attempt at Life/Civilization on this planet.
That there was a prior creation,, on this same planet (perhaps more than one) and that it was wiped out.

The Earth may well be much older than this present creation.

(There are some scriptures that allude to this,, but go into no detail. little is said about it.)

bIG bIRD IS ABOUT TO BE KILLED, fEATHER PLUCKED AND ROASTED LIKE A TEXAS BARBECUE, TOO? AS IN "a.s.a.p" AND THIS INCLUDES NOVA?
