Don't know much about it other than there are castes, and the light skinned aryans came in a couple thousand years ago and are at the top of the caste system. I figure she must be one of the Aryans. I would have never thought Indian though. I would have thought Italian or French, Iranian maybe.

She's a Christian. But her parents are Sikh and she sometimes goes to Sikh Churches to make them feel better. According to the article.

I agree that's a bit odd but that's her right and not really a big deal.

Well the lowdown is that the men aren't allowed to cut their hair (ever, that's what the big turban is for). I think they're also not allowed to show their hair ever (the men, that is).

There are five "K's" that they must abide to, which are:

1. Never to cut their hair
2. Always carry a wooden comb, normally under the turban
3. Shorts worn under their pants (signifies chastity)
4. Iron bracelets
5. A small curved sword

I don't know how many of them take this seriously (over here in Dubai a lot of them do, but I've seen some younger ones who aren't really "practicing"). I've even seen some wear a baseball cap over a hairnet instead of a turban.

Of course they are completely different from Muslims. They are closer to Hindus. But with their turbans and uncut beards I can understand how some people can confuse the two.

Irony here is that OP's title of this thread is tad bit more ignorant about racial slurs meanings in popular culture than the SC senators use of the slur; as much as it's wrong for him to use such slurs to attack non-natives, the Senator actually seems pretty educated user of colloquial racial slang in this case.

"raghead" is a term used usually against semites, arabs but also against foreigners, mideasterners etc according to diction of racial slurs. Nowhere in this news it is claimed that Obama or this woman were muslims, how did OP arrive at the heading of this title? I'm surprised no one caught this, this thread is a comedy of errors in a way LOL

When most people think of a "raghead" they think of an arab muslim. Take a poll and see for yourself. In fact most people arnt smart enough realize there is a difference between an "Indian" and your run of the mill arab muslim.

I can believe that, informative use of slurs would be a buzz kill in any case.

I meant not a big deal as far as her ability to serve in office. I wouldn't go to another Church's service but she has the right to do as she pleases.
