How are a nation's ability to manufacture candles at any way comparable to a nation's ability to manufacture cars.

Russia ended up going to war against a former ally. I'm not debating the reason why just the fact that they had gone to war.

The rest of the world cut them off from access to cars.

So now they are fighting a war using donkeys.

Even Adam Smith had exceptions for national security.

Our industrial capability in World War 2 helped us win the war.

It's not a lie that we need microchips and semiconductors if we go to war.

You can only do so much with birds with cameras strapped to their heads instead of having drones.

Or donkeys instead of having cars.

Maybe the candle argument works because we won't have electricity.

Democrats trying to force retailers to display cost of Trump tariffs on products​

The legislation comes after Amazon walked back a similar proposal​


Democrats planned to introduce a bill Thursday requiring retailers to display product cost increases to customers caused by President Donald Trump's tariff policies.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said he would introduce the Truth in Tariffs Act.

"If the President and his Cabinet of billionaires are forcing Americans to pay a lot more for consumer goods, the people have a right to know just how much. His tariff charge is basically a national sales tax and we always print the price of taxes on receipts," Raskin wrote on X.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the tariffs were "eating away at Americans' hard-earned money."

"Americans deserve to know who's picking their pockets," he wrote. "My bill with @RepRaskin will make clear that Trump's promise to lower costs on day 1 was fiction – all for a tariff policy that's sending our economy into a tailspin."

In case you haven't figured it out, here's what the major retailers are doing. Business thrives on predictability. Business can't predict what Trump's whims are going to be with respect to tariff contributions for specific products coming from specific countries on any given day. They're on-again/off-again. They're this amount one day and that amount on another day. So what's the safest bet for business? Just amortize the cost of all tariffs across their entire product offering. Treat it as overhead; like the monthly lease, electricity or other utilities. Wrap the total cost for this month, and then wrap it into product prices for the next month.

I'm betting that it would have been less expensive for your average buyer to purchase his Callahan Brake Pads from WalMart than from some specialty auto-parts store. Maybe, maybe not. But for the average WalMart shopper, the price for what's in their WalMart shopping cart is going to be lower than the total price they paid for what's in their shopping carts at fifteen different stores (without even figuring in the cost of the inconvenience of shopping at fifteen different stores)

BTW Swordy, when was the last time you changed a set of brake pads?
