Country you would live in?

The first place I'd consider would be Switzerland. Second would probably be Canada, and after that, maybe somewhere down south like Costa Rica or Chile or something.

I'd choose the OLD United States, if it were an option to just go back in time...

Switzerland would be great if you can get in. Unfortunately they haven't maintained their wealth and independence over the centuries by giving just anyone work/residency permits, and don't think too highly of American educational standards. But if you have the resources to do the world traveler thing for a bit and are just looking to bug out somewhere, why not.

I like the southern hemisphere because if I'm trying to escape a SHTF scenario, the further away from US/EU sphere of influence the better.

Switzerland, because of the mountains, beauty, libertarian lifestyle, and Roger Federer.

Also Poland, because I'm Polish.

They all suck. This world isn't comparable to say The World circa 1940. If the SHTF there is no salvation nation similar to the role the U.S. played for Germans and other Europeans during WWII. There are no free countries anymore. The only citizens of the World that can make any difference and actually turn this totalitarian ship around are the ones right here in America. That is why we are such a threat to their plans and why they have the DHS all up in our business. We are the only ones that can dismantle the Empire. Leave and you lose whatever power you had left.

There will always be a new frontier for those who seek it. Most expats that I've ever talked to seem very content with their decisions and live much freer lives than I. There is no dismantling the empire... It must dismantle itself. I don't know what that's going to look like, but I know it won't be pretty. I used to think the same way before I actually did some world traveling. My family and friends are my happiness here, but that's where it stops. No country is perfect, but there are so many places I could go where my quality of life would be so much better. I am coming around to the realization that eventually this will be the road I follow, for me as an individual. Not yet, maybe not even soon, but I will be prepared to do it quickly when I have too. As always YMMV.

If you don't want to actually leave the country but do want to increase your quality of life, NH and HI were recently rated the states in the US with the highest quality of life.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/48058146/?slide=11
1. New Hampshire
2012 Quality of Life Points: 298 out of 350
2011 Quality of Life Rank: 2
Quality of life is solid across the board in the Granite State. The population is among the healthiest, in part because of the quality of the environment. Want a little more civilization? Boston is just over the border, offering New Hampshire residents the benefits of the big city without the hassles. Crime in New Hampshire is among the lowest in the country.

2. Hawaii
2012 Quality of Life Points: 284 out of 350
2011 Quality of Life Rank: 1
Need we say more? It almost seems unfair to compare the Aloha State to the rest. Visitors from around the world seek out America’s island paradise. But when it comes to quality of life, Hawaii offers more than stunning beauty. It is one of America’s healthiest states, and the near reverence Hawaiians hold for the environment pays off with almost unparalleled air and water quality.

Costa Rica, Mexico, Argentina, Chile...maybe Iceland, Switzerland, Netherlands...Don't know enough about Africa. Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand.

I like governments that don't bomb brown people and let you ingest whatever you want without throwing you in a cage. The less developed the police state the better.

Yeah, if the police state is your worry then you really do not want to move to Singapore.

There are still states in the Union that are freer than 90% of the world, and more technologically advanced. SO I haven't given up yet. that said, if I had to choose the only other place would be Hong Kong. China only has control over it in regards to foreign policy and the army. IN every other way it is freer than most anywhere else in the world. Free markets make for free men.

Unless you have a drug habit, I'd be hard pressed to name anywhere in this world that would grant you more liberty with all the conveniences of modern living than Singapore. Like I said though, no country is perfect for everyone. If drugs are a sticking point for any given person, there are plenty of other options...

If we leave, they win.

The empire can't be fixed and it will collapse on its own. From what I've seen of the RP movement this campaign season, a movement composed of these people will not change a damn thing. The only thing lovers of liberty have left to do here is get themselves killed and/or put in prison camps in the middle of Wyoming.

I kinda agree with some of that but I think perhaps you are too pessimistic. Sure, I agree that the liberty movement cannot free the whole country but their is a chance we can at least make small changes here and there, right?

Regarding Singapore, If you are a gay male, you don't want to live there either. Male gay sex is illegal and will land you in prison. While I'm neither gay, nor male, I think I'd have a hard time living in a country that feels it is necessary to impose those kinds of restrictions and penalties.

Optimally, one of the Scandinavian countries. But since their immigration policies are highly restrictive, I'd opt for Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Israel. My only hope at this point in human history is for the prophesied redemption. And that's where it will start.

They are on a crash and burn spiral. I think that was the actual prophesy..not the one they hijacked. Wake up from that dream.

The Mediterranean, but can't afford it.

Southeast Asia, but too far away.

Panama. Affordable, low COL, tax free for 20 years if you build. No CB, so only means for debt is bonds. Panama Canal is stable income generator. Weather in mountains is as perfect as it gets for low energy requirement. Fruits, veggies, best coffee in the world, right off the tree in backyard. Only country that hasn't signed TIEA (Tax Information Exchange Agreement: witness what Swiss did to US 'secret' account holders after signing), which they likely never will sign. Excellent banking, banks and laws, and return on deposits. Close to US for visits. Close to SA, Costa Rica, etc.

That's my conclusion thus far, all things considered.
