Bernie Sanders criticizes ‘open borders’ at Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) found himself at odds with some immigration reform advocates Thursday, defending his 2007 vote against a comprehensive immigration bill and telling an audience hosted by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that "open borders" were a threat to American jobs.

"There is a reason that Wall Street likes immigration reform," Sanders said. "What I think they’re interested in is seeing a process by which we can bring low-wage labor into this county."

Sanders, who supported the 2013 version of immigration reform, had already waded into a moral and economic fight inside the Democratic Party. The latest round began with an interview with Vox's Ezra Klein, who asked if Sanders could favor "sharply raising the level of immigration we permit, even up to a level of open borders."

The Vermont senator vehemently disagreed. "That's a Koch brothers proposal," he said. "What right-wing people in this country would love is an open-border policy. Bring in all kinds of people, work for $2 or $3 an hour, that would be great for them. I don't believe in that."

Securing the border is becoming popular. Now it needs to happen.

As business owners that have struggled to make a name for themselves he'll probably get their vote. These new "immigrants" are giving them a bad name.

Unfortunately, Sanders is articulating basically what I have been advocating for years. He has talked about national sovereignty, and the effect of supply and demand on employment and wages. I would go further and relate it to social spending, both for immigrants and citizens who are unemployed.

Dave Brat, a Tea Party Republican, ran with this issue and won a spectacular victory over the entrenched, big government, establishment RINO Eric Cantor.

Now we have Bernie Sanders, fighting his SJW global leftist team-mates on the position. At least it's entertaining, and may shake up the Democrat brainwashing.

Would be nice to have someone articulate it this well on the GOP side. Trump is not taking this position on this issue. He is simply beating his chest about rapists and murders from another country, to the cheers of the WWE fans.

Yeah, this stuff is always been another one of those things that brilliantly highlighted the idiocy of the left and the right and how they are both only concerned with hating what the other likes.

I mean, look at how the left hates outsourcing, but then embraces illegal aliens, while many on the right love free trade but are against open borders, I've always been like "WTF is the difference?", well, actually I guess outsourcing is somewhat less destructive, at least that takes place in other countries.

Unless your job is outsourced and you find your career essentially over as a result of government policy.

I don't think you got what I was saying, both scenarios cause Americans to lose jobs, I just meant that at least the people doing the job in other countries aren't burdening our welfare system in addition to taking a job.

Roger that.

In addition to securing the borders, H1-B visas and the policies and deals that cause outsourcing need to be changed to rebuild our domestic high-tech work force. We have very talented (world class) talent that have lost their careers to H1-B visas and outsourcing. Not only does this impact lives and the standard of living -- it also impacts our national security.

Yep, all kinds of costs (including government costs) associated with increased population, especially with high unemployment.

Environment is another issue. It's kind of ironic because it is starting to bite California leftists. They support increased immigration, yet at the same time are drinking toilet water (err, reclaimed water), rationing water and turning in neighbors who water their garden. There is gridlock on the freeways. Housing prices are going through the roof due to little space left to build on. Sure, plenty of resources for more immigration!
