Atheist = someone who positively believes that no god exists.

No, that would be a Gnostic Atheist (i consider myself one) but you can also have Agnostic Atheists who don't believe in a god, but do not claim to know if there is or isn't one.

Atheism vs Theism are terms describing belief in a God, or lack thereof. Theism is a belief in one or more "God". Atheism is the absence of the belief in any "God".

Agnosticism is with regards to knowledge instead of belief. If one does NOT KNOW f there is or isn't a God, they are Agnostic. If one KNOWS there is or isn't a god, they are Gnostic.

Agnosticism is not an alternative to theism/Atheism. You can have Agnostic/Gnostic Atheists, and Agnostic/Gnostic theists.

I don't believe in an all-powerful caring supreme being who put created intelligent life on just this one little planet as some kind of thought experiment. If there is such a being, I believe it would look down upon those who blindly follow some human writings which have been deemed holy (and not to be questioned) by many but which contain so many logical fallacies and inconsistencies that it wouldn't hold up to even the slightest amount of scrutiny. And if there is a heaven, it would be filled with non-believers.

But I understand the fear of mortality and the search for a meaning in one's life, so I don't fault believers quite as much anymore as I used to.

I don't have the answers to why or how it all started but I certainly don't believe in fairly tales some men came up with so and so years ago. I try to follow the principles of philosophy that are through reason and logic my guide to my limited understanding of my existence.

Sadly, what you're describing is the teachings of Western Christianity, not Jesus Himself. The 4 books from the bible that contains the life of Jesus are some of the most amazing writings in existence. To not know them and try to understand them would have to be the saddest thing if Christians are the ones keeping you from doing so. If we all lived according to the teachings of Jesus, we'd have no need for Ron Paul.

I don't bible thump but in the same breath I am not so full of myself to try and say that I know where we came from either. I can however say that church christians IS NOT where I would ever want to go back to again (been there from age 5 to high school) and trust me I spent my time as a so called christian LOL. What a waste of time (no offense to those who bible thump)

its faith man, try and disprove that to someone who honestly believes in it. Also whats the point, they try and prove there is a god we try and prove there isn't but at the same time we can all believe in our constitution and agree at least on that. Only thing even with that damn thing is the rights being given to us by our creator BUT even that is left to interpretation.

when we all die we will all know where we go but in my opinion we go back to the earth and thats that.... no second chances, no going to some other place whether good or bad based on how you lived or what you did down on earth.

you know how many christians when you ask," where is hell" actually LOOK DOWN as if there is a ton of sinners and satan down in the middle of our earth..... come on now....

He was a teacher(rabbi). Then, as now, teachers commonly did their lectures orally, and students (disciples) took notes. Some rabbis wrote books and various literature, but not all.

but totally agree on us being one in the same as nature, same make up and all.

My thing though is, just like learning in life I never want to assume or pretend to know everything so I enjoy keeping an open mind even when my open mindedness tends to mesh well with VERY closed minded folks as far as the "possibility" of their being a god.

I myself am 99.9999999999% sure there is no god but hell I do know that when my life is hard as hell and my mom tells me she is going to pray for whatever reason it makes me feel better. I know it doesn't actually accomplish anything BUT for some reason in the same breath that FAITH my mom has gives me comfort when life is kickin my ass.

Using the classification system ClayTrainor laid out, which I think is a good one, I guess you could say I'm an Agnostic Theist. I feel fairly confident there's a God or higher force out there, and I do pray to this God/force every day. I feel fairly confident in the existence of an afterlife as well, since energy can never be destroyed but only change form. But it would take a lot of hubris for me to say 100% that God exists, since really, absolutely knowing something like that is impossible. Even science itself has never been able to definitively prove or disprove God or an afterlife.

In summary, we can all call ourselves Theists or Atheists in matters of belief, or faith. But in terms of what we know for sure, with absolute and unequivocal certainty, it is only possible to be an Agnostic at this early stage of scientific discovery.

I welcome it because many of the "atheists" who support Ron Paul have the right views on issues like decreasing the size and scope of the federal government, abolishing the Fed and allowing the free market to work, etc. I can work next to them in the cause of liberty and in getting Ron Paul elected.

However, when it comes to such things as justifying why we have rights, whether we need civil government, and living by the rule of law, I definitely would disagree with the "atheists" in their explanations of such matters on a philosophical level.

I'd say I've run into maybe 2 out of thousands of people in real life who've outwardly said they were atheist. And maybe 1/3 or half this forum is. So yeah it's relatively high.

According to a lecture given at the atheist convention I attended, there are two types of atheist. One is the one you describe; they are absolutely convinced that there is no God. These types are usually scientists who not only have a deep knowledge of religion, they have a broad knowledge of different ancient cultures and languages, such as Greek and Hebrew. The other kind of atheist is one who doesn't believe in God because they feel that there isn't sufficient evidence for them to believe in a god, but would would change their views if such evidence was presented.

That's because there is no such thing as a philosophy of atheism. An "atheist" doesn't necessarily base his beliefs on the fact that he doesn't think about what you call God, whatever that is. For comparison purposes, please note that a "achocolatist", somebody who doesn't like chocolate, won't necessarily agree or disagree with Ron Paul. The fact that he doesn't like chocolate is not useful to determine his beliefs. That's why it's ridiculous that atheism is even a word for some people.
