You are dead on. These people are simply insane.
In my mind, the overt and fundamental religious mindset is one of utter darkness. The only true evil I can think of is an organization or philosophy that seeks, as it's ultimate goal, to crush the rational mind. These religious organizations, so hellbent on end times theology are obsessed with death and therefore no more than cults of death. What else could it be to want death so badly, or to hate life on earth so much? Are they not worshipping death by praying for the end of life on earth? If that's what you want, then get on with it I say. The rest of us want to live.
The political equivalent of "battered spouse syndrome".Here's the evangelical's dillema... I think deep down... the thinking ones know that they are being used by the elite... the fake conservatives ... and will eventually be kicked to the curb.... but what choice do they have? They are terrified of breaking up their base and losing any semblance of power in the fragmentation... and really, rightfully so. Find a way to insure that they will always have a voice and will always be able to have their concerns heard and at least have the possibility of affecting public policy and you find a way to capture that respectably sized voting bloc.
I tried to warn my right wing family that America is much more atheist and shallow than they think, and that a strong violent backlash may be on the horizon, call it a tribulation or whatever you want... the left is getting very powerful, and they are not that happy with christians.
I have asked them soemtimes, "doesnt it bother you that it seems George Bush is accelerating the apocalypse" and they reply with something akin to "thats the way God said it would be"
Its like if the anti-christ declared itself tomorrow, they would vote for it, just because it was fulfilling god's will.

The GOP elites are the cruel husband telling the poor wife "Where else are you gonna go? Who else is going to take you?" And just like her, the evangelicals go right back to the Republicans for more abuse and neglect.
I just called Steve Scheffler, the president of Iowa Christian Alliance. Before I could even get a single word out he very angrily told me to stop calling him (it was my first call). He said he's trying to get rid of all the "stupid voice mail and emails from people like you." Then he said "don't call me anymore," and hung up. Sounds like Ron Paul supporters are doing their job and Mr. Scheffler is feeling the heat. His contact info is below. Keep up the "stupid voice mail and emails." Don't lay off these people until Dr. Paul gets a fair deal from them.
