I didn't mean for this to go into a debate about democracy. I was just looking for an answer as to why C-SPAN cannot be reached via the call-in line they keep announcing. But, since you mention it... How come our pledge of allegiance doesn't say "... and to the democracy for which it stands..." ?

Democracy - a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Have you called in before? They may have you in their notes as someone they should be ignoring.

I've never called C-SPAN before.
I keep trying to call in to the number, and I get one ring then disconnected.
I just wanted to comment how sick I am of hearing morons call in and talk about "our democracy" and correct the record.
Democracy is a system of government where the citizens exercise power by voting. In a direct democracy, the citizens as a whole form a governing body and vote directly on each issue. In a representative democracy the citizens elect representatives from among themselves.
According to wikipedia
So yea, we have people voting for their representatives who then advocate for the interests of the people who voted them in. And I know you think the interests of the minority is protected but only to some extent. I say this because just about every protection can be repelled with enough people voting. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and all the amendments can be repelled.
Also, they way they say it, a republic is one and the same with a democracy. Think about it, can you name me any country that is a democracy and also not a republic(i.e. also have a constitution that generally protects the rights of the people)?
And yet some here idolize Iran.Iran has a constitution that protects zero rights of the people and gives ownership of everything to the state and it calls itself a republic so I do not think what people call it makes it better .

Chapter III [Article 19 to 42]: The Rights of the People
Article 23 of the Iranian constitution holds that “the investigation of individuals’ beliefs is forbidden, and no one may be molested or taken to task simply for holding a certain belief.”
Article 24 "Publications and the press are free to discuss issues unless such is deemed harmful to the principles of Islam or the rights of the public. The law shall determine the details of this exception." [18]
Article 27 provides for freedom of assembly, "provided arms are not carried" and the assemblies "are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam".
Article 37 provides for the presumption of innocence, stating: "Innocence is to be presumed, and no one is to be held guilty of a charge unless his or her guilt has been established by a competent court."
Article 29 [Welfare benefits] is a universal right of all to enjoy social insurance or other forms of security for retirement, unemployment, old-age disability, lack of guardianship, being a wayfarer, accident and the need for health and treatment services and medical care. The government, in accordance with the laws and by drawing on national revenues, is required to provide such insurance and economic protection to each and every citizen of the country.
Give evidence for the bolded part or I would assume u are making $#@! up.
But below is a portion of the Iranian constitution.
Even though it is an Islamic republic, it still has protection for religious minorities like the Jews and Christians(unlike Saudi Arabia and other ME arab countries)
And yet some here idolize Iran.
