What was the alternative to what the police did in Boston?

Isn't it funny how when we send our soldiers to war, we refuse to declare war and pretend it's a "police action" instead. Meanwhile in America, we have our police equipped as soldiers parading down our streets with heavy machine guns mounted to armored vehicles going door to door, weapons that supposedly don't belong on our streets but in warzones...

We use euphemisms to deny the reality of the wars at abroad and at home, and yet we're so quick to declare war on things like drugs, poverty and obesity.

Well said, +rep!

They could have simply broadcast their pictures, and told people to be on the lookout for them but not to approach as they usually do. I cannot in my lifetime remember a whole city being shut down before.

I'll bet many of them had school children that knew exactly what you are suppose to do.

Interesting theory......

I can't however grasp the concept of a federally funded and controlled "militia"...

Help me out?

It would probably be easier to make a case for the Natl Guard, but it didn't look like they were involved in this thing. Watertown PD is presumably made up of local residents. The police chief said the FBI made assets available to them.

Are you stating that you believe the town of Watertown has the ability to mobilize a several thousand man militia replete with armored vehicles and thermal imaging equipment?

Or are you trying to suggest that maybe these militarized guys running up and down the streets in packs just might have been soldiers and not militia members?

Or something I'm missing altogether?

A wanted poster, spread around town, with a bounty only for information that leads to a confirmed location, or substantially higher to bring the suspect in Alive.

So what was your alternative? Just tell the police to go home and not do anything to catch this guy? It just seems like you guys will take the side of the criminals over the police in all of these situations.

Very often, I would, because what the police does always has an effect on me. My alternative is to do it the same way as always. How did they catch criminals before we had all this mumbo jumbo about how police must take every precaution to keep us safe? I bet it was just as effective as it is now, if not more so. Private investigators can do a lot more without trampling on people's liberties and spending taxpayer dollars just to go marching around in a line. Before it is my duty to present an alternative, however, you must present evidence that this was actually a good way to do it. The burden of proof is on you.

Ok, thanks. That's really the first real alternative that anyone has presented.

No, it's not. You're just not paying attention to the ones that don't require the police to be the heroes. There are tons of alternatives. It is your job to tell me why I should accept what they did as a good way to do it.

The police state? So you're saying that what happened in Boston on that day is now going to be permanent throughout the entire U.S? What evidence do you have of that?

What surprises me more is that you think this WON'T be repeated.

"Guys, it was just one time. Sure, we trampled on your rights this time, but we won't do it again unless we absolutely have to... promise." Yeah fucking right.

I think they could've replaced about 8000 troops with 10 bloodhounds and caught the guy quicker. He was bleeding to death, he wasn't going to get really far which is the whole idea of going door-to-door.

But if they did that, they wouldn't have had the opportunity to do this:

It's for your own good, this is going to hurt me more than it does you..........
