what the hell is going on in DUBAI??????

A mile on a side? My first thought though is where they get enough water for one million people. Steam- meaning water- is also listed as an energy source (although you need another energy source to create the steam). Then there is simply the thought of one million people in a square mile. That is a linear 28 square feet per person- obviously they would not be on one flat level, but it is pretty dense. This would require some serious design logistics.

The Great Pyramid was about 750 feet on a side- this would over 5000 feet on a side.

half of that million people will be us hamsters shoulder to shoulder running on treadmills that will thus convert our energy into heat to produce the steam... human batteries

getting the water doesnt seem to be an issue for them howevr purifying it and removing the salt may be an issue

oh geeze im goin to bed my head hurts

This is QUITE spectacular. Definitely not on a level playing field with the U.S., considering wages and unions, but still amazing. We may not be able to have the quick pace of beauty as Dubai, but we could certainly be working our way up. Unfortunately our whole country is in the gutter. We are losing all of our "glam." New York City used to be (even when I was a kid in the 90s) such an amazing place in comparison to the rest of the world. We have REALLY fallen apart since the mid 90s. Asia has taken over in architectural technology and creativity. This is not a good sign. Dubai is BEAUTIFUL nonetheless.

I cant see Dubai surviving unless it becomes the Global Vegas.
Well my guess is that they eventually will. Once a place has all of that wealth and infrastructure it will attract people from around the world. It is a tourist magnate. It's centrally located between Africa, Asia, and Europe and is ripe to become the next Vegas / Orlando.

This is capitalism at work. Even though it is not free capitalism, it is capitalism nonetheless.

Dubai kicks ass. A true future metropolis.

Not really. I've known people who have gone over there and came back with mixed opinions. It really just is a tropical resort, and some shops with the same whacky laws you'd expect from more radical ME countries.

I think we can all agree though:

Sit on a bunch of oil + Government with little care of human rights + Build some nice buildings = Profit $$$$$$$

You know in the UAE upon retirement you are required to move back to your home country. Only workers are allowed to live in the UAE, generally.

Holy shit

I've been following Dubai since about 1999. I remembered this thread while watching a new Dubai video on YouTube tonight. You should go to YouTube because the video is large and high-def.

Also, let's not forget that they've built the tallest man-made structure in the entire world, the Burj Khalifa, while the buildings in the so-called United States are crumbling.

. . .
You people are so naive, listening to Ron Paul as if he speaks the truth.
Decades of our involvment . . . had nothing to do with 9/11!

There is a list of anti-Wilsonian conservatives that would NOT have put our wealth in to trying to stabilize the world with an interventionist foreign policy -
it is hardly only Ron Paul.
Try Dwight Eisenhower . . . who recognized the potential for USA misguided efforts with a buildup of the armaments industry.

America makes great bombs and missles - that is what we do -
and that is the USA brand our politicians, now Obama, all prosper on.

Dubai is amazingly going in another direction.

AHHH, Dubai where a kiss is not just a kiss but a prison sentence. How modern. How human centric.
