What passes for "Debate" in Murica's colleges these days

As someone in College let me say that all the non-STEM majors are a laughingstock. You can't call it college - it's more an adult version of day-care that you pay money to get inundated with superfluous bullshit.

STEM is really an acronym for Sausages Twirling Eachother's Meatsticks. Sure, there are a couple of ugly women taking Calculus VII, but not enough to go around. STEM degrees are better though.

Debating reached its zenith in the 70's with, "Jane you ignorant slut!".

Something must have been lost in translation cos I dont understand your post. What about worldstar hiphop?

These "debaters" *might* be the the most intelligent orators in the culture that worldstarhiphop promotes. At best they can hope to outwit these geniuses:

Whenever I was a high school teacher, I tried "coaching" Cross-examination debate for UIL. I gave up after 3 months. I guess my simple mind cannot grasp how speaking 1000 words a minute, and all the rest of the idiocy that goes along with it counts as a "debate". This video is not unique, try looking up other cross-examination debate videos on youtube and they are all pretty similar. I just don't understand the appeal of this competition at all.

Forget the speed and terrible delivery, they didn't even make good points based on what I could understand.

I dunno, it seems pretty common in the debate world to do some sort of stylized thing (it's been happening for decades, really). They do their research and write up their arguments, but the delivery in the actual debate is not the norm, which I think is fine if that's what they want to do. I personally would prefer a standard debate, but I'm pretty indifferent to this. The goal is to win the debate, which they seem to have done. If they provide a strong argument which can't be countered, regardless of the delivery, then they've accomplished what they set out to do.

Since when was ebonics classified as stylized debate?

Nothing said in that whole damn "debate", and I say that loosely, made any debate point whatsoever.

That first vid was embarrassing. Had to stop a few minutes in. I don't see how this can be considered any sort of "progress" for blacks in what is called "higher education". I saw/heard almost every negative stereotype about blacks I've heard expressed by one person. SMFH. My high school and college debate teachers would also be ashamed.

Do modern debate contests have anything to do with the art of public speaking? I think not. An ultra fast delivery with short, shallow breaths and ridiculous neck tension is not persuading anybody.

I'm still trying to comprehend how people can can swallow this nonsense.

Can people be really this stupid?

Wait, that's just a rhetorical question. Yes, they can.

Why does it matter how they speak? Whether you agree with them or not is entirely different. They were speaking in African American Vernacular English to reinforce the topic they were discussing I believe, but whether or not that was the reason is irrelevant. I remain completely indifferent to a bunch of kids debating for sport.

If I was having a debate with someone and then he went on a 10-words-a-second rant hyperventilating like the hulk, I'd simply walk away in fear of contracting liberal rabies.

Wit? What wit? There wasn't so much as a half to be scraped up between the lot of them.

And this is what so much of American seeks to emulate.

This is a good part of that which biases me heavily toward a conclusion that says we are going to either fight to the death or be consumed in this gathering wave of harping, jumping insanity. It's no longer well contained, the psychological divisions are ever widening, and "they" are looking to get what "we" have.

This is what your tax dollars are buying.........Nice eh?

I'm not sure what the problem is.

That, in itself, would appear to be a problem.

All I saw was a stylized debate,

See an ophthalmologist, quickly.

taken in a specific artistic direction.

You call that art? Gee, I guess it really is in the eye of the beholder.

I actually thought it was pretty interesting.

You're not doing yourself any favors in admitting this.

Actually, it reminds a little of this:

Or perhaps even this:
