What passes for "Debate" in Murica's colleges these days

I'm not sure what the problem is. All I saw was a stylized debate, taken in a specific artistic direction. I actually thought it was pretty interesting.

You have got to be kidding me. If that is a debate then E! News covers all the important topics of the day.

I think I'll stick to Socrates, Aristotle, and the Scholastics and leave this mockery to the mentally challenged (is that the term you're supposed to now-a-days?). As someone in College let me say that all the non-STEM majors are a laughingstock. You can't call it college - it's more an adult version of day-care that you pay money to get inundated with superfluous bullshit.

To say that this was a joke would insult jokes. Well articulated, the two who spoke to the news, yet this was just ridiculous. Everyone's special and artistic, I get it, but goddamn. They did themselves a disservice.

That may be so, but if that's how they wanted to stylize their debate, and they enjoyed it, I don't really see the issue. There are plenty of 'proper' debates to watch or listen to.

I guess I don't see what the big deal is since this is by far not the norm. I just saw it as some kids having fun doing some sort of avant-garde take on debates.

Reminds me of the non-sense of postmodernism. Remember, this isn't some local debate, this is what Colleges are producing and then we have the President of CEDA calling everyone who values reason, logic, and debate point-counterpoint since Ancient Greece racists...I guess he is at the level of 'debate' as those Towson girls.

Remember, do not hate the player, hate the game. This team seemed to have played the game in the most efficient way to score the highest point and they won. Its sort of like someone who is used to rally racing complaining about Jeff Gordon winning the NASCAR race because he finds it strange of a race competition racing in circles instead of point A to B.

You look at the other teams behind them non surprise to their winning and you see that it is understood by everyone playing that they won fair and square. Lastly, you only have to beat your challenger to win the game.

And worldstar hip hop (dot) com has become the king of chimpanzees. Congrats for becoming famous for being barbaric and unreasonable.

I dunno, it seems pretty common in the debate world to do some sort of stylized thing (it's been happening for decades, really). They do their research and write up their arguments, but the delivery in the actual debate is not the norm, which I think is fine if that's what they want to do. I personally would prefer a standard debate, but I'm pretty indifferent to this. The goal is to win the debate, which they seem to have done. If they provide a strong argument which can't be countered, regardless of the delivery, then they've accomplished what they set out to do.

What the fuck? Why even bother, just hand in a god damn report the "judges" can read. It's incomprehensible.
Oh yeah, 1:40. What was that?

Like 14 people would have known about this if no one had bitched online.

It's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen (a guy literally rapped about chocolate watermelons,) but they seem to be having fun, and they're simply exploiting the rules and structures of the game, so more power to them. Can you imagine what the internet would have been like when the first forward pass was thrown or the triple option was introduced?

That said, I don't really see this spilling over to the halls of Congress or the UN any time soon.

This is absolutely ridiculous. My debate teacher from high school would roll over in her grave.

Holy crap. I am speechless... actually, literally speechless...

The one thing I can say is that ghetto culture has destroyed this land. I watched it escape. I watched it nurtured and disseminated into the greater population and now it is considered "normal".

There are things I'm inclined to write, but will hold my fingers at bay.

Old hat.
It would have been even more entertaining to put the contestants in the Ring.
Or the Octagon.
Maybe next year.
I'm looking at you,Paul Mabrey.

Art? Ha!

This is purely cultural Marxism. Reason is reduced to questioning the premises of a debate and ignoring the subject in favor of long-winded rants about "nigga authenticity" and gender norms. It's freaking pathetic. This isn't based on anything to do with reason. What reason dictates that it would help one's credibility to ram as many words into a time slot as possible while alienating 95% of the audience by making your speech incomprehensible?

This isn't art. This is based on the liberal reaction to "white privilege", reducing reason to nonsense because logic is something white people do.

+ rep.

I knew they would talk fast. In Cross-Ex the most skilled debaters can read up to 1000 words a minute. I didn't really listen to the arguments. High school debate was always more competitive.
