What is the most embarrassing political belief you used to hold but no longer do?

I posted this on my Facebook page and have a pretty interesting thread going.

Mine: I thought the Iraq war was a good, no GREAT idea. I voted for George W. Bush 2x including in 2004 while I was actually IN Sadr City. I used to argue until I was blue in the face that we had to fight them over there or we would have to fight them here and collateral damage (death) was okay because it was a war and Saddam OF COURSE was involved with Al Qaeda and 9/11 and had weapons of mass destruction.

That there's NO WAY the Iraq war could be about oil. The rest of the developed world would condemn us, right?

...right?

In the '60's I believed government employees followed the law, by '70 I'd been educated......Nam and Kent State were supper topics...

This for me too (except I was never in Sadr City. I voted fro Bush twice as well, even had Bush Cheney bumper stickers on my car in 00 and 04. Because the country was going to end the week after the general election if Gore or Kerry won in either 00 and 04... man was I fooled. Definitely fell into that left/right paradigm and mostly focused on stupid divisive issues (like gays, abortion, etc.) as the main reason as to why I would vote for the candidate.

Then I woke up in 07.

I supported invading Cuba. I supported Assault Weapons Ban. I laughed at the idea of medicinal marijuana. I started evolving in 2011, but it was less than a year ago that I became a Liberty supporter.

Once upon a time, many moons ago (like, circa 2005), I believed in ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT taxation to be imposed on every citizen, those funds to then be re-allocated to each citizen according to his need and/or ability.

Just admitting that makes me feel like an idiot.

I once thought the state should raise all the children.

After Columbine, I thought, "why don't they just ban all guns".

Wow, you guys got me beat.

Congratulations on discovering freedom.

And just when I think it's pointless to talk anymore...

Like the OP, I sincerely believed that the Iraq War was freeing people and stopping a threat of WMDs.

Even more sickening though, is that I was glad the bombing campaign began shortly after Bush's 48-hour ultimatum to Saddam. I can't imagine being helpless as bombs are exploding relentlessly in my neighborhood...

I was 21 at the time and it was a reaction (albeit dumb) to a current tragedy. I also didn't grow up in a gun household, so never knew the benefits, etc.

I also think that certain people are predisposed to "waking up" and others are not. Even as a kid I was very into the Nova JFK documentary. Before becoming politically awake I read Fast Food Nation in 2005 and loved it. I've always been fascinated by "alternative viewpoints". I think it was just a natural progression for me to eventually wake up. I've also always been naturally curious, and I think that trait goes a long way to helping you discover truth. Others you can hit them over the head with truth and they'll remain asleep. So for us to be this far along and have so many people yet to wake up, the question is are they wake-able? I know with my own family, I've lost all hope. It's pretty depressing for so many to still be asleep, but how can someone be a direct family member of someone who is awake and still remain asleep? That is called being too far gone in my opinion.
