What is the most embarrassing political belief you used to hold but no longer do?

i used to think hillary clintons original proposal for free healthcare in the early 90s was a terrific idea. i was about 16.

i cried in happiness for the iraq people when saddams statue was pulled down. i was about 27. then funny enough it was exposed as a planned propaganda stunt that the media helped put out there.

then thank god!!, the govs stories on 911 started to stink. then i found ron paul in may 2007. i think i have redeemed myself lol!

It is interesting to look back on the things we used to believe that were presented at face value (like free healthcare in the 90's was basically open socialism - gun control grabs are not being hidden) that we later realized were wrong; but it is also interesting to examine how far and wide the deceit is today, and has been prevalent in our history with things like: staged events for new end goals (furthering the police state), FDA controls for safety (corporate drugs are all that is good for you), hemp illegalization (wood, paper, clothing, fuel industries protecting their space), income tax passage (starting to exercise control and tracking while funding the state's expansion)...

When did the deceit start? Was it doomed from day 1? Did we just extend the length of time to the inevitable in 1776?

Deceit has always been there. We could chalk up having a 'good run' to "Luck". Funny thing about luck, the harder you try, the more luck you seem to have. I think too many people dont try to do anything about the Deceit that exists today. Just look at how many people will call ANYONE who questions the legitimacy of the Federal Reserve Bank a "Nutter" / "Conspiracy Theorist". We know the Fed to be nothing but Deceit, but these people are unable to even question the Fed's Legitimacy. They do not try to even understand it. When they do not understand, they will not do anything about it even though it is right in front of their fucking face.

All the perplexities, confusion and distress in America arise, not from defects in their Constitution or Confederation, not from want of honor or virtue, so much as from the downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit and circulation.

Adams is only ~1/2 right in your quote.

I've never really cared for the government. My mistake was thinking they'd never have a significant impact on my life.

I used to believe that the GOP was predominantly good guys with a few bad apples, and the Dems were predominantly either stupid or evil with a few moderates that were decent. Now, I know that they are all rotten and it is simply a matter of degree. There are a few with good intentions, and among them 95% are either shaky in principle or too easily turned to the dark side. Most people in politics have absolutely terrible intentions, only caring about amassing power no matter what it takes or the price paid.

Perfectly stated!

I used to believe that women did NOT own their own bodies.

I used to believe in strict immigration control.

I used to believe that the country was founded on Christen principles.

I posted this on my Facebook page and have a pretty interesting thread going.

Mine: I thought the Iraq war was a good, no GREAT idea. I voted for George W. Bush 2x including in 2004 while I was actually IN Sadr City. I used to argue until I was blue in the face that we had to fight them over there or we would have to fight them here and collateral damage (death) was okay because it was a war and Saddam OF COURSE was involved with Al Qaeda and 9/11 and had weapons of mass destruction.

When I was 4 or 5, while watching news they were talking about the rising cost of bacon and I thought to myself that the government should just not allow the prices to go up.

Some time after that I got better.

Prior to 2007 I thought “conspiracy theorists” very likely suffered a form of mental illness; and that granting government the use of advancing technologies could only result in evolving society for the better because such advancements would never be misused—and besides if you had nothing to hide, neither would you ever have anything to worry about.

ETA: And that America is a democracy.

The State is necessary and just.

"Sir, what have you given us"?

In this one seemingly innocuous question lay the entire problem of humanity throughout its history in a single neat and concise nutshell.

This is why the Meaners are doomed - they will NEVER give of themselves; never work for themselves; never direct themselves. The rot of the Empire Mind is raging across the planet as an unstoppable plague, growing and become impossibly powerful. The Mean no longer want anything else - and I don't care a whit, save that they suck the rest of down into the maelstrom with them. That is my only objection in any of this. I am literal when I say that save for the troubles it would cause those who remain I would not bat an eyelash were the Meaners to take pistols and blow their own brains out en masse at the precise same moment across the face of the globe. Other than the ensuing health disaster, I would in fact feel the most biting impulse to throw a party and have sex with just about every woman I could get my hands on. Oh wait, my wife might not be so keen on that last bit - but the party would be on. I have no love of stupid, cowardly, self absorbed, and mindlessly avaricious people. None. They can literally all kill themselves and I would judge the world vastly improved, but would not move to kill them against their wills, all else equal.

And then he awoke.

I used to believe either republicans or democrats were better... never could figure out which... now I'm past it.
