What does TV do to your Head?

If you are all going to agree that viewing all tv is bad then you have to say the same about You Tube videos that we've learned so much from. Not all tv is crap, just most of it, but if watched properly it can be a great educational tool. I mainly just watch historical programs, documentaries and classic boxing, for me anything else is a waste.

I don't think of youtube the same way I think of television. It seems more like an "impression" of TV than TV itself. Sort of the way a photo is a snapshot of reality, not reality itself. It could be bad if one spends hours watching youtube, but the most vids are relatively short. Plus, it's not a continuous stream-you have to make an effort to find the vids, which puts the time more into perspective (at least for me it does). TV tends to make people oblivious to passing time, so they wind up watching for hours without even realizing it.

If there is porn on the TV, my head gets bigger and turns purple.

After Feb 5th 08 (Super Tuesday) I got rid of my cable box and just do NetFlix. I haven't watched TV in almost a year.

Now I cannot stand to be in the same room when broadcast/cable TV is on; especially the news. It makes me want to scream, yell, and throw things at the TV even on the most average unimportant stories. Why? Because their shallowness, ignorance promotion, and bland propaganda has become crystal clear.

If you quit watching TV (especially the news) for a month or two, and then go back to watching it, things will become exceptionally transparent, and you will feel the same rage I promise!

Father leaves it on all the time. That shit dumbs me down and makes me forget my Austrian Economics and the other historical things I read, that and the public school. 5 months..., 5 months.

I don't know if I agree with what the information in the OP says, but I do know that too much Internet browsing can lead to this (especially here on Liberty Forest):

agreed, Theocrat.

In any event I'm sure there's some validity to the statements...none-the-less, I'm always analyzing things that are going on in a show's storyline or plot...it's usually only with comedy that I really enjoy that I ever "lose myself" so to speak.

In any event, I was never a big TV watcher when I was younger--it just didn't appeal to me really; the only thing I enjoyed were the (now very very long gone) Saturday morning cartoons.....besides that, I may have watched about...oh...maybe 1-2 hours a week.

These days, if I watch TV it's mostly re-runs of sitcoms I like, a few newer shows, and movies.

I'm glad they are doing this digital switch, it forces me to do other things and do homework without being distracted by tv...That and I only get 5 channels at the moment :)

But from a propaganda standpoint, it seems counterproductive to turn off soo many tvs, unless they are assuming most will buy new ones or the boxes...

LOL!!

About the only things on TV I watch are sports, the occassional show on Discovery or History, or maybe a movie on HBO.

My wife will watch the news. Occasionally I hear the stories they report on. I feel the same way as you when I hear them.

The good thing is that both my wife and I are such sports fanatics so the only thing on during prime time is a hockey game, basketball game, football game, or baseball game depending on the season. And yes, we subscribe to NHL Center Ice and MLB Extra Innings and we get more than our money's worth.

Absolutely agreed!! I experience the same phenomenon. I used to be a cable news junkie. Even when I wasn't watching it, it was on. Since I stopped watching, I have zero tolerance for it. I honestly cannot stand to watch any cable news channel for more than a minute or two at the most. In addition to the garbage peddling & propaganda that you mention above, the channels are too disorienting with the graphics, constant rapid movements, and sound effects.

Turning off cable news has definitely impacted my ability to carry on a conversation with people who are still cable news addicts. I just don't have any frame of reference anymore. They bring up 1 news story after another, expecting me to mirror their reaction. They have wonderful memory for what is reported, and then emotionally react in the way that the report is delivered. I think the information cited in the original post is spot on regarding the effects of TV on the brain.

You MUST check this out; it will only take a few seconds but they sum this up nicely:

The best quote? "this crap is turning our brains to goo":D

Yes, very much so. I think there is a lot of sociology that goes into this nonsense.

When I was little, I was a big TV watcher, but now the only thing I ever watch is The Dog Whisperer.

I feel ever so much more connected, informed, and mentally alert now that I don't watch 2+ hours of boob tube a day.

Well, if you watch it these days, it makes you sympathize with terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezzbola.
