I think this is an incredible solution. The American government would have nothing to gain by invading an non-intervening government with almost no natural resources on it's land. It may also be feasible to use the gold and copper we've collected as some type of currency on the island.

This solution takes us away from US influence, away from the estimated $55 TRILLION dollar national debt. I'm lucky in that I'm currently unbound and am very interested in this idea... With proper planning (at least 3 years...) I think we could really do this...

To go temporarily collectivist on you. We (Americans) have been self-sabotaging ourselves since the start of the 20th century for failure. We have an opportunity to move away from the irrationalist movement: get away from the bullshit and start over.

I can say absolutely that Dr. Paul (or at least his message) beats out, absolutely, every other candidate on every single issue (okay... except maybe immigration and abortion). The failure to vote for him is the result of gross laziness or irrationality. I have no intention of belonging to a group with such low standards. My American flag hasn't been up since we "declared war on terror" (My state flag went down when partisan politics led to the shutdown of my state government and a steep increase in taxes).

The smaller the population of the island, the harder it is for it to have a viable economy, so having an island that can accomodate at least 5 million people is essential.

I don't think any plots of land are available in the world that are comparable in size to Hong Kong or Singapore, so if this route is going to be pursued, then another government will need to be negotiated with and convinced to sell off a portion of their land. I think Africa or Indonesia would be the best bet.

I apologize for the word, though it applies. Let me explain.

I have seen this topic quite a few times on various forums and websites. It all starts like that, with a bright idea to get your own island, and start anew. Then people look at a few pretty pictures, talk some more, make big plans, and eventually the discussion dies, moving on to something else.

This happens fairly consistently, the more successful discussions produce websites that quietly die somewhere catching dust. A handful of those get somewhere close to actually starting something. This is not say that you will fail, just to observe what is now quite common.

And the reason it makes me angry, is that it's one of my favorite daydreams. I don't have the slightest doubt that creating a new country with just a couple of volunteers and ideals would be horribly difficult, and it will most likely fail. That doesn't prevent me from wasting a lot of time on the topic.


After I have read twenty or thirty pages here, I was ready for the bughouse. Any hint of discussion was dissolved in doubts, random ideas shot from left and right, pointless exclamations, and downright naive statements.

You people are infringing on my daydream, and we can't have that.

Until I made my way to the end, I learned that there is a forum for this discussion... fine, that is a start. But even forums have their ways of distracting from the topic, and important issues tend to fall from notice as they fall from the first page.

So I made... this. It is a wiki page, open for your additions. Its purpose is to collect ideas and data on starting micronations. Some of the options considered are a bit out there, but it is intended to be a serious resource. I have written up some basics already - they can be expanded and reorganized as necessary.


I seriously wouldn't mind seeing this project of yours fly, I have just seen too many of similar ideas founder, without leaving any permanent marks outside, only shreds of thoughts and plans.

So if you don't mind, I would like to invite you and yours to use the resource, and add your ideas to it. Besides your final plan (whatever you decide for), you can explore alternative routes, and drop any ideas not fitting your vision there. With a bit of luck, others will come in and add their bits. When others start with the same idea in another forum, the resource should prove its usefulness. I should note that I am not desperately attached to the concept, and may eventually step down to let a better person keep the place in shape. If there is a better way to pursue the idea, it can be moved as well. But let's see how this works out.
