We need our own island

If I wanted to start my own country, or "micronation," why wouldn't I just declare myself as emperor or king? I trust in my own benevolence.

Seems like all we're doing is coming up with ideas and getting nowhere. At least we would be getting something done. We can form a fair system around this premise. I think it would be a good idea to annex Paulville.

I am doing the best I can, over 50 members on the forum, but unless everyone else decides to do their part we can't go anywhere. This isn't a one man job people.

Anybody seriously interested in this thread needs to read this article:
http://www.wired.com/science/planetearth/news/2008/05/seasteading?currentPage=all

Also bookmark and read the 300 page book that is linked in the article:
http://seasteading.org/seastead.org/book_beta/full_book_beta.html

The book (online book, free at the above link) covers almost all of the things that have been discussed in this thread.

I haven't looked through it all yet, but it also looks like there's a lot of info at their site:
http://seasteading.org/

A quick summary of what they want to do - They want to build floating homes based on the design of off-shore oil rigs, and put them in international waters where many of these floating homes can get together and form their own government. If somebody doesn't like the community they're in, they could just tow it to a different one. PayPal founder Peter Thiel has already thrown down a half mil on this, so it is very real. They've definitely done their homework, and know what they're doing, as you'll see in the book.

I doubt they cover "everything" we have discussed here and on the forum, as the two ideas have several differences, this one being closer to Bruce's Liberty Ship project, at http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=110&mforum=libertyisland, but I'll check it out ;)

Found this thread in the archive, been a year since the last post. Anyone still here?

Somewhere. I created a forum, we had about 60 members, then the posting slowed down until it grinded to a halt. I'm waiting for the time when I can resurrect the idea, while keeping in contact with the core of the group.

Wow looking through this thread brought back memories, I've been on this board a long time. Can't believe this ended up at 450 posts, longest thread to date I've made.

That's what one of the main problems would have been. To get an island where our complete rights to it would be respected by the rest of the world...
