I think this is an incredible solution. The American government would have nothing to gain by invading an non-intervening government with almost no natural resources on it's land. It may also be feasible to use the gold and copper we've collected as some type of currency on the island.
This solution takes us away from US influence, away from the estimated $55 TRILLION dollar national debt. I'm lucky in that I'm currently unbound and am very interested in this idea... With proper planning (at least 3 years...) I think we could really do this...
To go temporarily collectivist on you. We (Americans) have been self-sabotaging ourselves since the start of the 20th century for failure. We have an opportunity to move away from the irrationalist movement: get away from the bullshit and start over.
But... I'm not entirely sober.
