Wanna Bet Perry Doesn't Show Up To 9/7 Debate!?

Hell, Perry has a history of skipping out on Debates. The biggest one I remember was the 2010 general elections for governer. He didn't debate Bill White even once! He straight up refused all debates!

I really think they are trying to keep Perry out of a debate format because they know he won't do well.

Obviously that was a wise decision. I'd be less than surpised if he does it again. The voters are indicating that they don't care if he debates.

He'll show up. There was an article of the preparation he was doing on Politico, he raced home and avoided De Mint's forum 'because of the wildfires' but had a full fake debate (at least one, so far) and numerous prep sessions. He will have a backhanded dig about Ron's ad, I'm sure, short enough not to get Ron rebuttal time, and a very prepared series of speeches to answer foreseeable questions. He won't be spontaneous, but I don't see anyone asking out of the box questions of him. The left wants him to run because they know they material they have to destroy him, and the right establishment wants him to run because they think he is being successful pulling the wool over tea party eyes. They won't disturb that.

Yeah, but he didn't agree to go then not go. De Mint's he could pretend wasn't important, when really it was the one he couldn't cram for to avoid really answering anything.

Rick Perry won't commit to debate amid Texas fires

Citing the press of business from wildfires ranging across Texas, Gov. Rick Perry, the front-runner in most polls for the GOP presidential nomination, on Tuesday left it up in the air as to whether he will attend Wednesday’s Republican candidates debate.

Perry is the star attraction in the debate, the first since he jumped into the presidential race and took a commanding lead over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the candidate Perry unseated from the top of the polls.

Speaking on CBS’s “Early Show,” Perry wouldn’t commit himself to participating in the Wednesday debate, scheduled for the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library in Simi Valley. The debate is co-hosted by NBC and Politico. (Watch video below.)

Speaking to CBS anchors Erica Hill and Chris Wragge, Perry was evasive about his plans. He canceled several campaign apperances over the weekend in New Hampshire and South Carolina to return to Texas to deal with the fires, which have caused widespread evacuations and have already destroyed about 1,000 homes.

“I don't know,” Perry told Wragge of the debate. “That's a fluid situation at the moment, so again I go back to we're going to be taking care of the folks here. I've got a great team of people to work with. That's one of the things I've been blessed with for 10 years.”

In television appearances on CBS and on Fox News on Tuesday, Perry avoided talking about politics and took the high road, appearing gubernatorial in a crisis. He sidestepped questions about Romney, who has recently escalated his attacks on Perry as the Texas governor has climbed in the polls.

“I'll be real honest with you; this is not the time to be talking about politics,” Perry said. “There's another 14 months ahead to talk politics. Right now I'm substantially more focused on making sure that these people ... folks all across this state are being taken care of.”

The latest poll to show Perry with a commanding lead among GOP stalwarts was an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released on Tuesday. It found that Perry was the first choice of 38% of Republican voters, followed by Romney at 23%, Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 9% and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann at 8%.

Those figures are similar to other national polls, which, like the NBC/Wall Street Journal survey, show Perry capitalizing on “tea party” movement support. In the NBC/WSJ poll Perry leads Romney 45% to 18% among tea party supporters but the pair are statistically even at around 27% among non-tea party Republicans.

I wonder if someone 'on the inside' set those TX fires? Perry just might get elected if they can't keep his mouth shut to the public long enough!

I said yesterday he would be a "no show". He has too much to lose, and not at all prepared.

he has a history of not debating. i htink he has debates 4 times since being Governor. The guy is a joke

Hopefully, if he doesnt show up, Ron says something along the lines on "well I guess he must be out smarting us again..."

Don't underestimate Perry too much. Yes, he ducks debates. But,

But there is an opportunity as well. If Perry comes off as a strong, charismatic leader, he could cement the perception that he has seized the frontrunner's mantle from Mitt Romney. And his lead in the polls — he was at 29 percent in a recent Rasmussen survey, compared with Romney's 18 percent and Bachmann's 13 percent — could prove more than a flash in the pan.

“He is a superior debater,” says Paul Begala, the Democratic strategist from Texas. “I think he's got more political talent than anyone in the field, except potentially Bachmann. He's way better than Romney.”

He's had good debates and some seriously bad ones as well (like the one with Medina.) He'll be bringing his A game tomorrow. We can hope for a gaffe, but don't rely on him being stupid.

I don't think I'd put much stock in what a democrat stategist has to say; especially with the Bachmann reference. It is pretty obvious to me that the Democrats would love a Bachmann or Perry Republican nominee. The poll #'s head to head with Obama tell you why. Of course the democrats are going to talk up the 2 people they know Obama can beat. Romney and Paul poll best head to head against Obama.

C'mon, Perry is a MORON. His A game is = Ron's F game. Unless they lob softballs, he'll do poorly and his poll numbers will drop significantly. Most people have never heard the guy talk and once they make the connection that he's W Bush without the brains (that W didn't have either) he's toast.

Except they don't actually debate, and the local media forums are more incisive than this will be. Deep dish or thin crust? Blackberry or iphone?

Big media wants Perry as the frontrunner and wants a two person race, apparently, looking at media in general, right now.

Perry will be as vanilla as possible in the debate. Taking a page from Obama, it's better if the electorate projects onto you what they would like you to be, than it is to have the electorate actually know you and understand who you really are.

His best hope for this nomination is that people continue to project their ideal candidate onto him. This shouldn't be a very hard task to manage at this debate. A few smiles, a few platitudes, a few jabs at Obama and he'll keep them going for awhile. He'll fall apart eventually. But it won't be tomorrow.

Suit yourself. Downplaying expectations is a tactical political move. All Perry has to do is not fall off the stage at this point.
