Why not do both?
Close the border and address "root causes".
The war on illegal immigration. At the end of the day, how is it different from the war on drugs or the war on terrorism? At the end of the day does anything ever change? Donald Trump worked to destabilize Venezuela so, in his words, he could steal their oil. And....that part of the "root cause" of the problem was brought to you by the same man who offered a border wall as a "solution" to the problem. I think that's PAF's point. And we brought in 100K Ukrainians and we're still funding the war that's causing them to be displaced. We destablized Haiti. The CIA's fingerprints are all over that most recent assassination. And...there are displaced people in Haiti. (That huge deposit of Hatian gold wouldn't be a factor would it?) Biden and Ted Cruz are threatening Uganda over gay rights. (That huge deposit of gold in Uganda wouldn't be a factor would it?) DemoRATS and REPUGnicans will have window dressing arguments over immigration, while coming together in lock step bi-partisan support for the horrible foreign policy that creates the displaced populations in the first place and they never get called out on it because their rank and file supporters think their favorite politician is "right" on leaf issues while ignoring the root issues.

Here's the funny thing. It wasn't some white Christian city council that had the balls to ban all flags except the American flag and the state flag, effectively putting an end to city sponsored pride month. It was an all Muslim, immigrant based city council that did that. Chew on that for a while.
