Trump Threatens Smithsonian Over Slavery Exhibits?

Federal appropriations should be eliminated. It'll be cheaper on me, and the private donors [sector] can do what they want and let the market work it out.

There is too much focus on slavery and white supremacy and not enough on personal/individual responsibility. IMO.

Slavery in America, as everywhere else in the world, was about the powerful exploiting the most vulnerable.

The whole black/white narrative is retarded. Unless, of course, you're among the powerful class... In that case, it's rather convenient to shift the blame.

I agree with Thomas Jefferson, "that to compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical."

Without having watched the video in the OP, I suspect that this quote applies to both sides. As long as taxes are used to fund museums, it is a given that that power will be used by the state to further opinions that those in power consider advantageous to their cause.

It's a lot easier to rule over a fearful and divided population than a friendly and united one.

 So...by law, in the United States ONLY black people could be slaves. In fact there was a case where a very light skinned black woman was thought to be white and the town almost rioted to free her until her owner was able to prove her african anscestry. Telling the truth about what happened is not "blame shifting." And the straw man of "Slavery existed for thousands of years and was practiced around the word" is not excuse to whitewash the history of what happened here. Genocides have happened for thousands of years. The Israelites killed every man, woman and child of the Amalakites. That doesn't excuse the German Holocaust and the Holocaust doesn't excuse the starvation of children in Gaza. Recently @Anti Federalist posted in his "Taking things from white people" about an attack by a "chief Metacom" THAT HAPPENED IN FREAKING 1676! No pushback from you on that. It's only when anything is said about anything that happened to black people in America is discussed that people have a problem. And I'm not singling you out. This is a general problem. Trump has not brought up a single bit of misinformation in the Smithsonians exhibits about slavery that needs to be corrected. It's just that the exihibits exist that's the problem. Truth is treason in an empire of lies? I guess some lies are more equal than others.

You like Thomas Sowell. In one of his videos he said slavery in America wasn't because of racism but rather racism in America was because of slavery. In other words, to justify what had never been done before in the history of the word (agains, according to Thomas Sowell), one group was using race itself as the excuse for slavery. Prior to that Europeans typically enslaved Europeans, Africans tended to enslave other African, Asians tended enslave other Africans. When North Africans enslaved white Europeans the Europeans were looked down upon for being Christians, not for being white. So even as Thomas Sowell attempts to get his grift on (I wonder of Nick Fuentes will ever call him out?) he admits that race is all over the question of slavery in America.

And that's why the powers that be decided to make slavery exclusive to black people instead of enslaving (directly) poor whites. And Trump, in this latest move, is pushing the division harder in part to cover up his cover up of the pedophilia of the rich and powerful.

The Smithsonian is run by a private endowment but it does get federal funds. In the meantime Trump is spending $10 million to rebuild confederate monuments torn down in 2020.

Further, Trump isn't trying to cut the funding for the Smithsonian. He just wants to whitewash any slavery exhibits. Yes. It would be better if no federal funding was going to any of this. But to spend money pushing a racist narrative while attacking documentation of America's racist past, which even black conservative Thomas Sowell has to acknowledge, is beyond the pale.

I understand. That's why I said that I suspect the quote I gave applies to both sides. I wasn't letting Trump off the hook.

I have no problem with that. Private donors aren't the ones funding confederate monument restoration however.

Further, Trump isn't trying to cut the funding for the Smithsonian. He just wants to whitewash any slavery exhibits. I actually believe that it's important to preserve history as it happened. The white racists who defend the Confederate monuments call that "preserving history." That is a lie. When the statutes of Stalin, Lenin and Saddam Hussein were toppeled, their history didn't magically vanish. What Trump is doing would be like Russia putting Stalin's statue back up and then intrusting museums to erase any exhibits that suggested Communism was bad. Would you agree with that?

I could not disagree more! See above. Everyone, including you, seems all into keeping up with history whether it's about the holocaust or "them damn injuns" or the Muslim pirates or communism or whatever. It's just ONE part of history that people seem eager to push under the rug. And this will probably have a Streisand effect. I'll be honest. I haven't even been to the Smithsonian since the African American Museum was built. I have relatives that went. But it wasn't that high on my list of priorities....until now.

How many non-black slaves did the founders own?

I don't care if Smithsonian has a slavery display or not , of course I don't want to pay for anything they have.not really sure why pres would be bothered with it he should be busy getting me some spending cuts

Huh???

It's important to look back to history so as not to repeat it again and to learn from mistakes. But I am against reparations, and the white-supremacy-rising that is the back lash of that.

There are plenty of private resources one can refer to without government funded ones. Some will even loan stuff or donate them. Mises.org, for example, has free book offers from time to time, but I also buy from them to keep the institution up and running.

They can also go to Hillsdale College and/or other institutions [for a cost], for all I care.

So, what's the beef?

50% of libertarians say the 13th amendment was government Overreach and that they should have just let the "free market forces" take care of things.

 That's a red herring. The Smithsonian didn't have "reparations exibhits." They had slavery exhibits. And this is the first time in this thread that you've mentioned the term "reparations" so I think that's disingenous.

My "beef", if you want to call my simply disagreeing with you, is where you said this:

"There is too much focus on slavery and white supremacy and not enough on personal/individual responsibility. IMO."

Talk about "reparations" isn't even the subject. And if you had simply said "Everything should be privately funding" I could have seen that. But that's not the only thing you said. I addressed the part of what you said that I disagreed with. I'm allowed to do that without it being "beef" right?

The question of slavery and how its characterized has always been who is guilty of it.

The left has for decades tried to blame the entire country for slavery that they didnt commit.

We dont do that for other crimes.

We dont blame people who didnt commit murder for murders they didnt commit.

We dont blame people who didnt rape people for rapes they didnt do.

We dont do that for even the worst crimes. We dont blame modern Germany for the genocide of the jews.

So yeah I think we should contextualize history for what it was and stop the politicization of history.

Ok, here:

Everything should be privately funded.

Happy? 😀
